Size Comparison between major Brands Empty
PostSubject: Size Comparison between major Brands    Size Comparison between major Brands EmptyFri Sep 27, 2013 8:50 am

Good day,

Can someone tell me what the differences in size is between the following animals from the main Major Brands?

Maybe it would be nice if the "shoulder heights" are given, in cm. For animals with long mane hair(neck hair?), measure shoulder height excl mane hair)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
When considering what to buy in buying animals for diorama's it could be very handy.
I have mentioned only the African animals that I know of. Otherwise the list is to long. If I missed some, just mention them, but only African….
if sizes are not correctly mentioned, let me know
Please mention sizes as follows: S = Height x Length x Width where the first letter is the Brand:

Bullyband    = B
CollectA     = C
Mojo          = M
Papo          = P
Schleich     = S
Safari Ltd   = SLtd
AAA           = AAA
Chap Mei    = CM

(other decent, nice brands welcome, please mention brandname and if possible picture)
I have got a excell document where I do keep these sizes, I can not link the excell to this post, but have added screenshots.

Who wants to help to complete this list?

If there is someone who has got the same animals of different Brands, it would be nice if a picture/photo is placed with your post so the differences could be seen clearly(animals next to each other). Pease mention which animal is which brand!

Well, I made a porcupine comparison [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] :)

Schleich: lenght with the tail and straightened head would be approx. 8cm
Shoulder height 3cm
Overall figure lenght 7cm

Chap Mei: lenght 8,5cm
Shoulder height 3cm

AAA: lenght 9cm
Shoulder height 4,5cm

Chap Mei and Schleich go well together, AAA is too big and fat :)

I think model animal collectors have to accept that most of the figures they're collecting were made as TOYS, and so manufacturers (from a century or more ago up to the present day) were mostly concerned with selling them as such, which included considerations of unit pricing and child safety regarding very small items. Consequently, large animals (elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, etc.) are usually undersized, and small animals and birds are usually oversized in proportion to each other.

One way round this for a diorama, if different brands can be found which match in styles, is to use smaller scale ranges for the smaller species. So if most of your animals are larger scale Bullyland, Schleich, etc., see how the Britains flamingo, pelicans and stork looks with them. Even more so with farm dioramas, where Britains chickens are probably a good match for Schleich etc. cattle & horses.

You are so absolutely right , Dave !!!! Very Happy

No matter how fine the models are, the manufacturers have to make a living, and they can not live from the +/- a   (few) hundred collectors. Wink
I think I read somewhere, that to make a profitable standard plastic toy model, it has to sell about 50.000 copies  scratch

So, as you say, to make a diorama, we need to use our creativity.
Or perhaps a bit of imagination , like children do when playing Wink
Also, if the too-small animals are place in the back, they may seem larger.

An irrelevant memory Embarassed ....when my mom was a child, they used stones with holes in ( found on the beach) for cows.
They could be tied to a piece of string and graze in circles  ...no problem with peeling paint there  Laughing

Good day,
Yes, you are right, And it wasn't my intention to say they all should compare equally to each other. I have got these animals as toys for my kids, and they do like them.
But then, as parents, you would like to buy them toy animals who are more or less the ssame in size.
And that is exactly the reason why I wanted this list. To compare different animals from different brands. Then(when doing a internet purchase) you have got an idea of the size of the pescific animal, because when i do read the size now, i forget it, and a moth later i don't know if the "one lion" was larger/smaller than the other one.
So i do hope to urgrade my list again, propably in January again, haven't don much to it these laste two months, but will do next year, in life and well-being.

Toys may be but they can still educate children. Hence the reasons why in the good old days Britains and others adopted the same scale for whatever animal they produced.

However, in modern times we have child health and safety regulations for under 3 years old and under 14 years old. So this is the reason why we don’t have sparrows or platypuses in 1:32nd scale - kids will swallow them!

Also in the 1960’s it was acceptable to buy and play with animal figures until ones teenage years. Today animal figures are aimed at a much younger audience and need to be larger (to prevent swallowing and choking!) and softer to prevent damage to soft skin!
