PostSubject: Miss Jane's Schleich Repaints (*NEW* Friesian Bull to Black Angus Bull Page 3)   Fri Nov 15, 2013 11:43 am

I thought I might as well jumble them all in together, considering I will, likely in future, be doing many of these.
This thread, in particular, is dedicated to my Schleich custom repaints.

Enjoy.

WIPs always included. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Schleich Pinto/Mustang to Red Roan Horse
I bought this one with the intention of customising and selling. At first, I wasn't sure what to make it - a Mustang of rare or beautiful colours - no, it is shod! An appaloosa - no, not the mold. Buckskin or bay seemed to fit, but maybe not.
Then I found the right one - Red/Strawberry Roan. It fit perfectly.

There are some extraordinary roans out there. I met a lovely Quarter Horse Red roan recently, and what a pretty horse. Perhaps that is some of the inspiration. I took further ideas from these, real life examples:

(The main photograph I based my darkness of redness on, above)

Work In Progress:

Before shots - The Schleich pinto, new model, bought new. I must say, its eye would have needed painting anyway. Yuck.

The first layer - base coat, minimum x2 coats, boring grey.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The third or fourth layer, x2 coats, boring brown. This is actually part of the base coat for the roan. (You can see I used the tail as a handle for holding onto, hence the grey showing through.)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

First layer of white added. It's fairly invisible. White painted on x3 - 4 times.
These are not highlights, but colour patterning.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Blending colours together - Reddening added - starting to look like something!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Red added to neck/head, now its really looking like a roan.
Red is blended and added x2 times.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Darkening added. Note I darkened knees, muzzle, etc.
Later on I added detail to tips of ears, & darkened muzzle and knees.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Muzzle is darkened, blended... Knee shading added.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Nearly finished. Hooves painted, silver horseshoes added,
and eyes and nostrils coloured with shining black paint.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Complete. (Drag images for full size.)
This horse is quite different to look at, in blue or bright light he appears completely different.
I thought about adding white markings to the muzzle but decided against it. I really like the complex & simplicity of the coat colour pattern/combination, especially the darkened areas.
I also thought of adding white highlights to its eye, but decided against that, too. The shine really works.

In different lighting (overcast, outdoors), he appears different again. Very lovely.

Really great color choice cheers I can't wait to see him finished! What medium did you use for this? I always wanted to do a roan, and now I see one of my bodies would look really good in this shade strawberry roan. Wink

It looks great, and roans are pretty hard to accomplish for most. Good job! Very Happy

So far, I have only repainted Schleich horses.
I am working on an Angus bull, however...

But today, let me introduce...

Arabian Stallion Fleabitten Grey

I am very, very pleased with this effort. He was based on real life Fleabitten greys and I purposely bought the Arabian stallion model to repaint (and sell on ebay,he's on there now). I am thrilled with how realistically he turned out.

Some real life fleabitten grey arabs, from which I referenced:

(Interested in how I did the spots? Well..... it was a pin. Yep, that's each spot, individually painted on. Shocked Shocked)

I am keen to see how much this one sells for. And happy to say I think my skills are improving. =P

Oh - and the original model, of course...
