My unpainted snow leopard sculpt. Sorry for the pics, I used a cellphone and I'm not a good photographer either. Also I suck at painting, so I wanted to show it before I ruin it.

GREAT model!  Laughing I especially like the pose and facial expression. My only suggestion would be to add texture, but it is only a personal preference and I encourage you to do as you want. Keep up the good work.  Applause

I hear you, but the lack of texture in the fur was actually requested by the person who made me the comission, because she liked the look of the smooth surface. Thanks everybody for the kind words.

Its still really good. I can think of lots of other great figures as well which are smooth and untextured.

And it is so great that there is no texture. They have this wonderfully soft fur, you can't see much texture  Wink

Knowing how much you love felines it is fantastic that you're sharing one of your works with us. Very Happy
I love the work, mainly with head although the requested lack of texture contributes to a very massive look! Shocked Wonderful pose and I hope we have the chance of watching more of your works. cheers

PostSubject: My painted snow leopard sculpt    Mon Dec 23, 2013 5:45 am

My painted snow leopard sculpt, I ruined it, as I promised. This was the first time I painted any of my models for obvious reasons: I don't know how to do it, never got the chance to learn. Getting the colors right is much tougher than I thought, I feel even more admiration for Harriet now.
To be honest, I don't like the results, it looks cartoony, any advice or recommendation on a good book or tutorial on how to paint sculptures would be much appreciated.

It is not cartoonish at all, it is very nice. this kind of painting reminds me the Colorata style and it is a gorgeous style.

You want to improve so you are not satisfied. i know the feeling. You will learn and will improve. Enjoy  cheers

I think you are being too hard on yourself for the first time you've painted a model. You did a good job with the face, eyes and markings. After undercoating I apply a base colour followed by a wash (a very thin watery paint which rinses over the raised areas with the pigment settling in the low points and crevices). This gives the model greater depth and realism. There's a lot more that can follow but I find this is a good start. I use the warhammer paint range and they have a great book on how to paint but it is expensive!

I think it's very nicely painted! You've done great job!
You've found way how to paint it simply but beautifully, this is unique style and I like it very much Very Happy
I think it's better to do the simple work but in right colours and shapes (as here) then add too much and end up with chaotic effect-your work is good example of nice and clean effect. Big congratulations! cheers

I love it as it is. But if you are unhappy with the painting, I would suggest maybe adding a few more shades of gray to your model, as a few people have mentioned before me. Otherwise, he is beautiful, not cartoonish to me at all.  cheers Very Happy

The figure is beautiful and the colours are perfect.
If you find it too cartoonish, you will need to add some shading/darker grey areas
at the right places to give it some depth.
Overall I think you did a wonderful job.

That's great advice, thank you! I've heard about the quality of the warhammer products, but they're quite expensive and hard to find here. Undercoating is the same as priming, right? I read that polymer clay doens't need to be primed before painting (so I didn't prime this one), but what´s your advice on that?

Thank you ALL for your kind words.

Oh, I love ruins! They are always wonderful and source of admiration! cheers
Honestly, I find your paintwork really clever, you've found a simple way to give a very pleasant looking with enough realism. It is interesting that it is one of the biggest challenges of manufactured figures, brands always try to find the simpler formula to turn a painting interesting enough. Very Happy
Though, it is great that you are exigent with yourself and that you want to improve. Harriet is an outstanding painter and I always knew Harriet like that, though, I remember her first sculpts, although very good, not as excelent as what we are used now. She insisted, improved and it is impressive what Harriet can do. Shocked
I am sure your technics will also improve to match your level of exigence. Very Happy

He/she is a beauty to be!
I'm pro texture, i think it gives the little bit extra!
But there is one thing that got my eye...
You have given the front paws 'toe´s' but it looks like you dind't do that in the back paw(s)?
Is this maybe on purpose?

I think with paint he/she is goin to be beautifull Very Happy

I apologise, I only just saw your reply and question... now 6 months later  Embarassed Yes undercoating/priming same thing (to me anyway). I always undercoat as it gives an even colour to start painting over. Baked polymer clay has dark and light patches which will often show through the first layer or two so the undercoat resolves that problem for you. Also it's easier to paint smoothly over an undercoat..just my personal preference.
