PostSubject: Color variations/morphs in wild mammals   Color variations/morphs in wild mammals EmptyThu Jul 03, 2014 8:40 am

Not so long ago, I knew about the e.g. white lion, tiger, black leopard, jaguar, but I did not give it so much thought.
Lately I've also came across various colored zebras, camels, dears and since I am fascinated by such color variations, maybe it would be nice to have a topic that kind of explaines such oddities.
I am sure that there are many people here who know more about these topics (maybe some biologists), but for a layman like me finding out something new about this is very interesting.
I just put the word "wild" in the title to avoid discussing dog, cat or horse colors.
I wan't to know more about the general mechanisams for such variations, so here we go..

Big cats:
This is a great graph of big cat color variation I found on the net, unfortunately not very sharp (non mine):

Zebras:
also a group of images I took off the net (not mine):

Foxes: (image not mine)

And some other animals:

Moose:

Camel:

Various deers:

I am sure there is infinitely more to say about this topic, so feel free to share what you know Very Happy

Fascinating indeed  Shocked

A SPOTTED ZEBRA !!!! I never dreamt that they existed  cheers

The danger about these mutations is that humans always want to have more of them, - like we see with the white tigers and lions  Rolling Eyes

Colour mutations are enormously interesting  Applause

You are right Susanne, same with colored foxes and such.

Very, very interesting to see all those different color variations.
