Animal Hybrids

We are used to some, suprised by the others.
Some happen in the nature, some in captivity, some are artifical.
There are many moral issues here.
Which unusual hybrids do you know of?

Here is a little list of mine (non of the images are mine though):

A mule is a cross between a female horse and a male donkey.

A cama is the combination of a camel and a female llama.

A beefalo is the cross between domestic cattle and an American bison.

A grolar (pizzly) bear is a cross between a polar bear and a grizzly bear.

The narluga is really just a chubby beluga calf (see the comments at the bottom of the page). I know SeaWorld in the U.S. had a common dolphin x Atlantic bottlenose dolphin hybrid that I'm trying to find a picture of  

I think it's such a shame that people breed animals just for fun. To laugh at the outcomes and give them silly names. It's ridiculous

She's the fourth one from the left, and she is a short-beaked common dolphin x Atlantic bottlenose dolphin hybrid.

Well I'm not the one to judge the "degree of sillyness" for the admittedly strange names, but if they get more common the name should be shorter and these are the obvious choises
Just like we have labradoodles and araappaloosas it seems we might also have grolar bears in the future. But, yes, they all sound silly, what can you do.

From all of these hybrids above, it seems that the only really artificial cross is the "cama".
But I wasn't very thorough when reading through.

I do agree that it is a little ridiculous that people actually breed them for fun, but in some instances (like the three cetaceans) we really don't have much control of that.

Interesting hybrids! I must say, that Ti-Liger and Lipard are gorgeous! It's amazing that these species would seek one another out and produce offspring (that is, if it is natural). Is it true that most of these hybrids would be sterile? As far as I know, there have been a few reported cases of mules who successfully carried offspring and ligers as well. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for sharing. It is very interesting to see how even just the gender of one parent can change how the offspring look (i.e. Ligers and Tigons). I've never heard of half of these, so this is fun to see them all.

At my grandpas, we sometimes will cross Hereford cattle with black Angus cattle to produce a hybrid called the black baldy, Gelby, or black Hereford. They grow very quickly (from hybrid vigor) and have excellent beef quality.

My grandparent's family farm does the same. Every year they breed an angus or Hereford bull to the cows to keep re crossing. Creates some interesting cattle.

I find hybrids that are breed in zoos like tigons or zorses to just stand there and impress visitors are really strange ideas. And giving them those funny names seems like, as LeeAnn said, actually a sign of disrespect for animals.

If it happens in nature, then I don't see a problem. In birds' world it happens for example to Capercaillie and  Black Grouse  (T. urogallus x tetrix), here is a link where you can watch some photos of such hybrids and hear the voice : [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The same with hybrid dogs, or "designer breeds" as they are sometimes called - practically, they are just mixbreeds with fancy names, as you still need to cross two breeds to get such dog (e.g. Labradoodle, a mix of Poodle and Labrador). Maybe on the future they will become new breeds.

Hybrids in nature - OK, they sometimes happen.
Hybrids created by man - not so much. Mules make most sense, as they are great working animals, combining good features of both parents. I love the look of zebroids, but I don't see the point of breeding them.

It is true that cattle are all the same species, but they are split into different breeds, the same as with horses. Certain breeds are bred to put certain emphasis on desired qualities. These are called hybrids because they combine two or more desirable traits together in an animal. Each breed is unique. Using certain breeds, such as black angus as dairy cows would be like using a thoroughbred race horse to pull a plow. In crossing angus and Hereford to get black baldy cattle, we are combining the angus' great carcass quality, with the Hereford fast growth. This makes a faster growing, better quality meat animal in the end. We have also crossed Holstein dairy cattle with Ayrshire cattle before, because of the Holsteins huge milk yield, and the Ayrshires ability to produce rich, creamy milk on pasture, rather than more expensive grain.

I got two camels yesterday on a fleamarket - a Bactrian male and dromedary female and I, of course, had to wonder:
