This is the topic where I'll share any customizing I've done on figures. At first I was careful, as much of my collection had associated memories from when I was little, and the new additions often had nice paint. So the few things so far have been rather "safe" targets for the brush. Lately I've realized the number of waiting figures has grown (Safari toobs are especially tempting), so I don't think I'll ever run out. Rolling Eyes

These deer were the first complete repaints I did. They needed rescuing, especially the female. I wanted to keep spots on them, so they became chital (axis deer). The figures have big heads and a stout build, perhaps better suited to fallow deer, but fallow deer antlers would have required customization with a bit of air-dry modeling compound (which I didn't have), while chital antlers could be approximated using a knife. If I hadn't wanted spots/big antlers, the best choice would probably have been something like hog deer, muntjac, or even little antelopes. But I'm happy with them as they are.

(See, they are very well fed. It must be the wet season!)

They have a slightly comical personality up close, due to their small size. One or both of the males may get more black around the mouth. Someday I need to make an Indian forest diorama, so they can meet some neighbors. Smile

Wow, They're so small! Shocked It must have been realy hard to paint those little white spots on such a small animal... I love them!

Thank you both. Christina I just saw your new horse repaints, they're really nice. I've seen the Camargue sculpt and like it, but never thought how it would look as a different horse.

Thanks for the nice compliments everyone (and fellow painters!). sunny  Yes, I think smaller animals would be my preferred size, but it is hard to find small figures where the quality and price are both good. Roger, I hope the story will not be so slow that it puts others to sleep! Sleep Laughing

Thanks to each of you for the comments. More catching up to do:

Years ago I got a set of colored plastic animals in a bag. They were better sculpted than most of my tiny animals, and became an important part of my childhood-mini-zoo-animal-collection. (Some are Marx copies, I think, but maybe not all scratch .) Anyway, there was a squirrel among them, way out of scale, in an odd shade of BLUE. It didn't get much use, certainly not in my miniature animal parks. But with the tiny animals it stayed.................

...........

Finally, I held the squirrel again and realized it was a perfect size to go with many larger animal figures( Rolling Eyes ), if only something could be done about that color. So I painted it as an eastern gray squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis, holding a black walnut fruit (alternatively a green crab apple). Most figures in production are Eurasian red squirrels, and a little larger, but now I finally have a nice small local squirrel. I love you

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Little squirrel, why so blue? Doesn't anyone want to play with you? Hmm...

That's better!

Maybe repetitive, but different light:

I hope you can get the general idea... I think the brownish is more obvious in all the pics than in person.

Interesting presentation! Very Happy Yes, almost all squirrels are eurasian red squirrels and the grey squirrel from Safari is a giant! Shocked
It was an excelent idea to transform that little figure in an Eastern grey squirrel, it just looks great, mainly with the racoon! Laughing

Here are the Safari Ltd. North American Wildlife Toob figures:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

They are all charismatic miniatures of larger models. Now, it is true that browns prevail in most of these mammals, but not these browns. So, some of them have received more natural pelage, with more to follow in the future. For now here is the wapiti:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He is on the grayish side, sort of an old winter coat.  Smile  Since this repaint, I found the larger version in this pose, so I can try a variation sometime. (The mountain goat shows painted hooves, but may get additional attention. The pronghorn will get his turn on here, too.)

Here is the bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) from the tube. You can see its original paint scheme in the previous group photo. Like the wapiti, this animal's coloration is more complex than one might think at first glance. I like their sheep-eyes and white snout.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Here it is with a solid base color applied.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There is also a nearly identical (but not quite) sculpt in the Desert Toob. I'm trying to decide, should I paint it as a companion for this figure or with colors more suited to a desert bighorn? I suppose they would look fine together even if they had different coats.

I'd suggest a desert bighorn, I find it an excelent idea. Very Happy

Wow great job with the elk and the ram. Fantastic figures hidden under crappy paint jobs and you made them looks like a million bucks!

Thank you, everyone. Very Happy  I realized I had both bighorn figures on hand, so let's do a little comparison, shall we?

There are two main differences I notice. First, the supposed desert bighorn has a slimmer body and legs. Second, its horns are curled differently, more outwards and less backwards. I do not know if this is an intentional reference to a different bighorn (thinner coat?) or just updated sculpting/tooling, nor do I know which Toob came first.

Thanks, everyone. Smile   NandO, I think a needle or toothpick can be easier than a brush for the center of the eye on such a small model.

Next are the repainted pronghorns that went with my figurines from the prairie scene. If you look at the Safari toob group picture you'll notice the pronghorn is one of the worst offenders, color-wise.

This one is from a K&M International wildlife tube. I've always liked it but it also looks better with painting.
