PostSubject: Show us your goats: wild and domesticated (genus Capra)    Thu Oct 02, 2014 2:36 pm

For  the October "Show us your" we have a topic about goats: domesticated and wild.

Domesticated and wild goats belong to genus [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], it includes following species:
West Caucasian tur (Capra caucasica)
East Caucasian tur (Capra caucasica cylindricornis)
Markhor (Capra falconeri)
Domestic goat (Capra hircus; includes feral goat)
Bezoar ibex (Capra hircus aegagrus)
Alpine ibex (Capra ibex)
Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana)
Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica)
Siberian ibex (Capra sibirica)
Walia ibex (Capra walie)

I was surprised to not see some well known species on this list: chamois and mountain goat. These animals do not belong to Capra but they will have a special topic in SUY yet this month!
Mountain goat is the only species in its genus: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Two species of chamois belong to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

So, to start the topic I will show some of my figures.
domesticated goats

From left to right: Britains billy goat, Jean Hoffler Nanny goat, Britains Nanny goat, Papo billy goat and Jean Hoffler again, in different colour.

And ibexes:

Signatustudio Iberian Ibex and Preiser Alpine ibex

No Mountain goats nor Chamois Wink

These belong again to different genus. Perhaps we could change a bit this SUY and add all members of subfamily Caprinae except the genus Ovis because we already have SUY sheep? scratch In such case we can include also Musk Oxen and Takins as well? But I don't know if it would be too wide for one SUY maybe?

Dear admins and specialists, please help me to decide Very Happy

Why not:), in last time we had more SUYs without special species and i think a SUY with all the other Caprinae is so very special that there is not a high chance for that. And so many figurines dont exists:)

OK, so all Caprinae here, except the domesticated sheep or all animals from the Ovis genus? And wouldn't it be too much?
I would vote for the option all Caprinae except the Ovis, but other option is also OK. Wink I still would be happy to know more opinions. Smile

Either way we can even add the musk oxen and takins and serows and Barbary sheep as well. Smile

You know i like ke SUYs with any wild animal species so i would like to see also musk oxes.:)
And all figurines from the family of wild sheeps could like in this SUY in the SUY sheeps:)

PostSubject: Re: Show us your goats: wild and domesticated (genus Capra)    Tue Oct 07, 2014 12:06 pm

My opinion is that we should make a little aesthetic in this topic and keep it only for Capra genus, both wild and domesticated. So, we have a topic similar to Show us your sheep.
Then, I open in the middle of October, another special SUY dedicated to other wild caprids (not goats or sheep).
These concepts are very confuse and I think, although not dramatic when someone puts anything wrong, that we should preserve some rigor to turn these threads educative to those who try to learn something with them. How can we make a joke about a seller putting a pangolin for sale as a lizard when we are collectors and mix everything? scratch
I also have troubles with some SUYs of farm animals but we always have the chance of learning with each others. study We should avoid in future to mix wild and domesticated. Wild animals are grouped according with morphology and genetic while farm animals are grouped according with other conveniences.
So let's see, caprines and ovines are obvious in farm life, first are goats, latter are sheep.
In Science, both goats and sheep are caprines.. and those belong to a larger group of caprids. scratch
Caprids are from family Caprinae, it goes from the musk ox, sheep, goats, chamois, etc.
This big group is divided in 3 tribes:
1. Ovibovini - musk ox and takin;
2. Caprini: All goats from Genus Capra, all sheep from genus Ovis more some members from other genera like barbary sheep, tahrs, bharal and blue sheep; all those from this group are what is correctly called caprines;
3. Naemorhedini: serows, gorals, mountain goat and chamois.

If we remove true goats and true sheep from these groups, the remaining are not many but enough to make an extra SUY. Idea
Mistakes will always happen once a blue sheep and a barbary sheep are not sheep and a mountain goat is not a goat. Laughing

Concluding, my suggestion to this topic are domesticated goats more the species from Capra genus that Ana listed on first topic. I can edit whatever is needed if my suggestion is accepted and as the topic is not too long yet, I can ask who already contributed to replace pictures that mix Capra with non Capra! Very Happy

Pronghorn is in it's own family and is more closely related to giraffes and okapis (they belong to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] together) then to antelopes and goats. study

But the family Antilocapridae had more members in the past and I think perhaps some of the prehistoric animals were already sculpted as miniatures too. So it would have to be a different SUY for them one day perhaps? scratch

Very Happy

Roger, I'm not sure if understand: include wild Capra or not? scratch Very Happy

Ana, I am suggesting both wild and domesticated Capra in this topic. It is to fit to the topic of Show us your sheep although I know it is mostly domesticated there.
However, my original preference would ever not to mix wild and domesticated but I think it is too late to change it.
So, we have a topic for Ovis genus, this one to Capra genus that are the most popular Caprids genera and I open a 3rd one to remaining genera. What do you think? :)
