Little Nayab birds Empty
PostSubject: Little Nayab birds   Little Nayab birds EmptyFri Aug 05, 2011 8:38 am

These little birds are, as far as I can tell, the regular small Nayab made no-brand models. For some reason, they're sold packaged in tubs of brightly colored goo called "colorful bird putty". (The goo isn't such a bad idea, actually - I suspect it gives some protection from warping or it would, if the canisters weren't so damn small.)
As you can see, they're not bad models apart from the usual sloppy painting and bad seams, and each is clearly identifiable as a species, there's no generic "bird" mold. Apart from these 4 I have an eagle, a californian condor, and a spoonbill. And you know, this made me think... If the manufacturer had just made the tiniest effort to play up the collectability aspect, these could be really popular. Clean up the paintjobs a little, stamp the species name on the model, maybe have a picture of all the different models on the packaging - who wouldn't love that? What a wasted opportunity.

I love that hornbill! Very Happy So much, in fact, that I bought two. The blue one appears to be a Victoria crowned pigeon, the owl is, well, an owl. But the grey bird? What is he? I want to say some kind of pheasant-related critter, but... Anyone know?

The bases aren't original, BTW - I added them because these models don't necessarily stand very well.

The grey bird is a white bellied go-away bird, it is one of the species of turaco, they are a group of African forest birds most are very colorful, usually the main color is green or blue but they also have bright flashes of feathers in red, yellow and orange on the base colors.

Oh, you're right! How cool is that? Quite apart from everything else, it's easily the best bird name out there... Can't be many models of those about!

These came from a Norwegian chain called Ringo. They used to have a shop here, but it closed down earlier this year (such a shame, it had a good Schleich selection). The other types of "fauna in goo" - the spiders and sealife and what have you - can be found almost everywhere, but for some reason very few places have the birds.
However, Tapirback is a good source for brandless models: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Andreas, send me an email with some of the unusual species that I might like if you get a chance, I am looking for any type of vulture and most Indian birds but I will consider any that are in about 1:24 scale.
Thanks,
Phil

They are really wonderful! I love it when brands make unusual species - the Hornbill is lovely. Have we seen the spoonbill you have?

Spoonbill, condor, and woodpecker, all repainted. The woodpecker has actually been repainted yet again after this picture was taken - he's now an ivorybill, and has joined my tiny collection of extinct birds.
