| Yes,like Takama has said. Sch makes the sh sound in German, ei makes an I sound, and ch at the end is a hard kh sound. _________________ Tim :) ToyAnimal.info - The Toy Animal Collecting Wiki Animoblog Animobil.info Playmobil Animals

So fast i dont know a english word with kh at the end. You are mostly right. But with the i only if you speak from yourself or as the letter self. It ei sounds more like ai or ey and also the ch sound mal re like a softer sh. So i would say Shl i sh or shlaish |

| Great subject ! I had no idea it was so difficult, as we are neighbours to Germany, and learn German at school - widukind wrote:
Shl i sh or shlaish Hear the expert ----- Perhaps for not-english persons, some examples : The sh pronounced as in "hush !" ( be quiet ) . The ei pronounced like "eye" ? Eye like the thing you look with. Is that right, Andreas ? |

| I know in Dutch a lot of poeple say 'shleig' because de ''ch' is a hard G in Dutchs. Sow if poeple are here and ask about schleig everybody knows and if somebody says Slaish, eveybody is like; What do you mean. Sow if i'm talking to somebody who know schleich, its okey to say shaish(k) But if i go to a lokal toyshop i really need to be asking for schleiggg XD its feels so stupid, but its fine because do's poeple don't know where they talking about |

| The Americanized version is "Ssh-like." The correct way to say it in German is like "Shh-li-shh," as Andreas said. It can definitely be difficult if you don't know any German! |

| Here's my two cents: In English (in America), one says "shlike" (rhymes with 'like'). If you want to approximate the german pronunciation, you soften the 'ch' in a way that I'd describe as making a 'shh' sound in the back of your mouth rather than the front, and not using your tongue the way you would with a normal english 'shh' sound. (It's more like a hard, raspy 'h'.) I'm pretty sure this matches what takama, Tim, Andreas and Susanne have said. |

So I pronounce it the American way then "Shlike" - I tried you're description of the German way, but I think I'll continue with the American pronunciation! My brother buys Schleich for his children and he says "schleck", not that it's right, but I just thought it was interesting hearing how some people think it's pronounced. _________________ Harriet My *Collection* My *Handmade Animal Sculpture*

| Hahah sorry i just laugh a little, '' I wonder if in your description you're talking about English "G" (still it can differ in words but OK) sound or about Dutch way of reading letter "G"? Because these are completely different sounds, I don't know what I should use in the toy shop now '' I know a lot of poeple in the world speak with a English 'G' pronounced like '' gee'' In Dutch we say the 'G' pronounced ggggg like a hissing cat ore something there is even a guide!!! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] It sound strange to not dutchspeakers ;)sow schleich is in Dutch most often schleigg, like you are really mad and hissing like a cat like schleig-g-g haha i hope this is more clear now |

| @Dum_me much more clear, thank you! Yes, this is very specific sound in Dutch, one of the difficulties for foreigners who want to learn this language (now I talk about myself ) I don't know if this sound is unique for Dutch but I think in many (or most?) languages "g" is read either as in English words "giraffe" or like in word "grumpy" or like in "gee" indeed (3 different sounds anyway) I don't know the English word with Dutch "g" (which for me sounds a bit like harder and louder "h" ) ... _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection

Funny that so many English speaking people pronounce the SCH right, but not the CH, - it is almost the same sound as in "shame". And where does the "e" come from ? Never mind ! If we understand each other, then of course it is ok |

| ^^ ... just ask someone from germany to do a quick one word voice recording with their smartphone and post it here ...
The *ch* at the end of the word *Schleich* is really hard to explain/describe for english speaking people, as there appears to be no such phonetic sound in the english language ;-) |
