Fox Knowledge Needed! Empty
PostSubject: Fox Knowledge Needed!   Fox Knowledge Needed! EmptyFri Apr 03, 2015 8:30 pm

Hi guys!

Is there anyone who can help me out about one or two certain red fox subspecies? I read this on Wikipedia:

Wikipedia wrote:
Japan is home to two red fox subspecies: the Hokkaido fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki), and the Japanese red fox (Vulpes vulpes japonica).

Okay, great, thanks Wikipedia!

BUT there is the gorgeous fox figurine by Kaiyodo (this one) stated as Ezo fox.

WHAT is an Ezo fox?? I know another beautiful model from Kaiyodo (this one), which is stated as Hokkaido wolf. When I checked out TAi, I found a category about the Hokkaido wolf which stated the following:

ToyAnimal.info wrote:
The Hokkaidō wolf, known in Japan as the Ezo wolf (..).

DOES this mean that this lovely Kaiyodo Ezo fox species is the same as a Hokkaido fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki)?

AND there's this third model by Kaiyodo (this one), stated as a Honshu wolf. TAi says the following:

ToyAnimal.info wrote:
The Honshū wolf, known in Japan as the Japanese wolf or Mountain dog (..).

SO maybe you can guess my next question: is this Japanese fox (Vulpes vulpes japonica) also known as Honshu fox?

I can't find much about them on the internet, so it'd be great if someone could help me out! Thanks in advance! study

Yes, it is!

I just found this site which says the following:

NIES wrote:
On Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu of Japan, the subspecies V. v. japonica is distributed.

So it looks like Vulpes vulpes japonica, the Japanese red fox, is coming from Honshu, which makes it rather possible that this fox would be called Honshu (red) fox, just like the wolf!

If someone knows more about this, I'd really like to know!! Thanks!

JAPANESE (KANJI): キタキツネ

I'm from my mobile these days, so very limited access. Though, without opening your links, i can tell you that these names to Vulpes vulpes schrencki are correct. it is also known as Sakhalin red fox. This fox, together with japonica, make the two red fox subspecies as you quoted from wikipedia.
Other with similar names but known as wolves are grey wolf subspecies amd not foxes. They often use island names to identify subspecies what turn things a little confusing. Very Happy
