Attempt at a Stag Moose for my Ice Age Collection Empty
PostSubject: Attempt at a Stag Moose for my Ice Age Collection   Attempt at a Stag Moose for my Ice Age Collection EmptySun Jun 07, 2015 4:15 pm

There are a few prehistoric animals that I need to "complete" my collection of Ice Age Canadian animals that I know will never actually be made. I totally understand why... In the market of animal toys, what's going to sell? Another Smilodon, or the Stag Moose, Cervalces scotti? Given that a Stag Moose was likely never to be made, I went about making my own.

Beginning with a Safari Moose figure, I cut off the antlers, carved them a bit, did the hot water trick to reshape them a bit, glued them back on backwards (left antler on the right side and vice versa), and then painted it. I figure it's a pretty good approximation, and about as accurate as any other prehistoric mammal toy. The head isn't technically correct (it actually had a more Elk-like head) but close enough.

And here he is with his new friends (alongside the Safari Turkey, Mojo Rabbit, and CollectA Przewalski's Horse I recently added to my collection. I've also recently bought the Mojo Skunk and Dromedary Camel, and Safari Great Horned Owl).

Quote :
The stag-moose (Cervalces scotti) is also known as the stag moose and was actually a deer that resembled a moose. It resided in North America during the Pleistocene era. Its range included New Jersey and Iowa, reach north from Arkansas to Southern Canada. It inhabited wetlands in these areas. This animal had long legs, a head resembling an elk, and huge, complex antlers.

The stag-moose became extinct during the mass extinction of large mammals that occurred in the last Ice Age on North America, nearly 11,500 years ago. Although there is no evidence that humans were involved, it can be assumed that they involved indirectly. Smaller mammals may have carried diseases that were related to humans, or as with other large mammals of that time, they may have gone extinct due to advancements in human hunting technologies.

That quote doesn't mention that Stag Moose were effectively supplanted by regular Moose, which migrated from Asia over the Bering Land Bridge at the end of the Pleistocene, alongside Grizzly Bears, Grey Wolves, Lynx, and humans. There's no clear reason from the fossil record why Moose out-competed Stag Moose though. The impact of animal migration is usually acknowledged for the Great American Interchange between North and South America about 3 million years ago, but rarely for the end of the Pleistocene, even though it would definitely have had an effect. For example, Grey Wolves contributed directly to the extinction of Dire Wolves by out-competing them for the more fleet-footed prey that was left after humans killed off many of the larger, slower herbivores that Dire Wolves specialized in.

Thanks everyone!

I actually went back, repainted the antlers to a more off-white colour and tried to shape the antlers a bit more. Unfortunately they don't seem to be keeping the shape. I don't know if I'm not doing it right or if our apartment is too toasty warm... I'm doing 1 minute in hot water to make the plastic pliable, about a minute under cold water to fix it, and this last attempt I kept it in the freezer for about an hour. But I can see it slowly creeping back to its original shape.

Any suggestions?

Very good idea to tine down the white colour ! Perhaps the white on the body should also be a little bit less white, even if a shdae lighter than the antlers ?

I am very interested to hear what the experience of others are with the "Hot-cold-treatment", because in my experience it almost always happens, unless the item was bent in storage and is brought back to the original shape scratch

Very cool. I have never heard of a stag moose. I've heard of and seen bull moose, but this looks completely different. Smile

The antlers have not kept the radically warped shape, but they are keeping the slightly warped shape I started with. It would have been nice if they did stay super-warped, but I can live with what I got.

Heh... It would be: stag moose went extinct about 10,000 years ago :)

This is a very cool idea for a unique figure! Between the paint job and the antler job, you don't really see 'moose' anymore.
I am very new to this and don't know from experience, but I wonder if there isn't a way to brace the antlers in the shape you desire while they're cooling off? Or maybe you're already doing that.
