PostSubject: A's New-Ray animal sets   Mon Nov 16, 2015 10:17 pm

These pictures were originally taken some time ago, and others have shared pictures of these animals, but here are my New-Ray figures from the small wildlife sets and a set of six cattle. I like these for a number of reasons: they were very inexpensive, and the painting is poor, which is perfect for customizing. Also, the sculpting of the ungulates is very good overall- notably, the bodies are thick while the legs are thin, and the antlers/horns are appropriately thin and pointed. These sculpting aspects are risky for mass production resulting in the compromises we usually see among "major brands". Some of the sculpting is a little strange- the faces of the bighorn ram and white-tailed buck, for instance. The small sets also offered a white tiger (more crudely sculpted I think) and cubs, which I did not get. I've never found the waterfowl-only sets.

The six cattle came together. There were other assortments, too.

That is very interesting Andy and I am sure it will be useful for future reference. We still don't know too much about New-Ray and we are planning to work that section soon on TAI. Very Happy

Thanks Andy! New-Ray keeps being still hard to track but I think the TAI page gives already a good overview of it. Lots from this topic are still missing there. Very Happy

I've just been looking at some of those other interesting series. Smile This topic is all I can contribute, plus a few old wildlife models that are already documented on the wiki. I should add pictures of those ones here, too. Feel free to use these pictures if they are of any use. I can take individual pictures if you need any, too.

Thanks Andy! I will have more free time than I expected during these days, so I think it is a good time to work that section of New-Ray USA. I'd love to start with the Wildlife series. You can confirm [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] if the pronghorn, white-tail family, moose and elk are the same as yours.
If they are, we are missing pictures of:
- Fallow deer family
- Black bear family
- Grizzly family
- Mountain goat
- Mountain sheep

If you could use a Lego or Megablocks brick to be used as comparison, it would be great. If not, don't worry too much about it.
We only need a single picture of each family. Orphans you can take individually. Laughing

Yes, those on the wiki are the same (the finish is variable from year to year on these, I think). I will see what I can do for the others. Also, I will be "hunting" for those birds shown on the wiki. Laughing

Thanks Andy! Very Happy I believe you are referring to the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] They surely make a nice collection and now you know they are 16. Though, even Beatrice hasn't completed it yet so I assume they are not easy to get. Good luck and if you get the cormorant, toucan or bald eagle, please show us! Very Happy

Actually I was thinking of the game birds from the other hunting sets- I think they are more attainable. Wink

The 1995 birds are fantastic finds but much more of a challenge, I'm sure.

Oh, of course they are easier to find. In a quick search you can find several being sold through EBAY. They are also relatively recent, from 2008 or so... and more realistic. Yes, the old series is quite challenging.

Very interesting, Andreas! Let us know if you find the polar set. There is a group of figures, chronogically between those we know with bases and the newer from New-Ray USA that keep quite illusive.

I agree that cheetah looks like a nice, small sculpture. The giraffe looks the same as mine but with different paint. I dug through my pictures and found one I made of my few older New-Ray figures:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So...I mentioned in the other thread that I thought they came two animals plus one accessory to a pack (plastic bubble with cardboard back), but now I can't quite remember how these two sets came: was it the wildebeest & pigs in one pack and the giraffe with two accessories in the other? scratch Maybe I saved the cardboard backs but I don't know where they would be anymore...

Also, I colored the eyes on the giraffe- it did not come with painted eyes like Andreas' version.

Thanks Andy! Actually those are very good figures! Bear are very recognizable to the species level. Especially these American black bears are very good with their typical snout and big ears. The mountain goat is a remarkable piece with that sumptuous pose. I added them on TAI, now only mountain sheep and fallow deers are missing from these sets. Very Happy

I agree the black bears are quite nice. The open mouths add interest: the sitting bear has a sort of "classic" feel to it, like an older illustration or taxidermy mount. The standing bear has big feet for understandable reasons, but has an overall good pose. I think the mountain goat could be even greater if it stood a little less steeply, though it has a strong presence. Most important is its accurate head sculpt, clearly that of a mountain goat and not a goat.

Here are the others (I know the white-tails and pronghorn are already on the wiki but I had them out at the same time so included them here):

Great! Now we have another beautiful gallery page on New-Ray section that could be seen [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] The white-tail family is very good. On the other hand the mountain sheep doesn't look really like a bighorn, could it be another species? scratch

Thanks for adding them, Roger. Since it is packaged with the pronghorn and mountain goat, I am sure the ram is meant to be a bighorn. I think the sculpture is just a little "off" compared to the other two, a bit stouter and bigger-headed, maybe. Sometime I hope to make some adjustments to mine and see what can be made of it.

My news is, finally, the addition of some of the ducks sets! cheers The site had only one mallard group in stock but I got a couple extra of the other set for a good price.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It's worth taking a closer look at one of the joys of these "cheap" toys- the beautiful backdrops in the boxes. It looks like a paradise for ducks (too bad the plastic is glued to it):

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The two groups:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Overall the sculpting on these is top-notch. The flying ducks are really graceful. The painting is okay. Doing justice to a duck's colors would definitely increase production difficulties and cost. One negative: two of the base posts broke as I was unpacking them, and will have to be glued (I'm pretty careful, so I think it was a weakness in the two posts).

Next, I was curious about identification for these. Here is a brightened/sharpened image showing two of interest:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The mallard on the right has a funny-shaped head, right? I thought this was strange considering the other three mallards aren't like this. Now, here are photos of ring-necked ducks:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The head shape is almost a perfect match. Also, this is the only figure of the four that doesn't have the distinctive curled tail feathers of a mallard drake. So, in my mind, this is a ring-necked duck masquerading as a mallard. Wink

Lastly, the two ducks alongside the wood ducks. study On the wiki they are included as American wigeons, and two small images of this species do appear on the packaging. The green stripes fit this, as do the lanceolate feathers (appearing on the swimming, but not the flying, figure). However, American wigeons have bills that look different- relatively smaller or shorter, that, along with their head shape, gives them a somewhat different appearance:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Because of this, I think the best fit is a green-winged teal. This matches the green stripe and feather shapes, along with the bill size/shape:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

If you disregard the stripe/paint, these could work as blue-winged teal or other types of ducks as well. So, I'm quite happy with them, and excited by their potential for repainting. Smile

Andy, congratulations for getting your new New-Ray! Yes, they are nicely sculpted, good size and poses but quite fragile. They tend to bend easily too. I am surprised with your trained eye. Judging based on colors is not easy for me due to my poor sight but I ahve to agree completely about the different head shape and the lack of the detail on duck tail. I see TAI pictures are from Susanne and some of my own editing, though, none of us have identifyied the species, I guess. We found it through the forum if I am not wrong. We could even later redefine it if needed. Very Happy
