Then you can hardly (not at all) mix the paints to the right shade of colour, then you are far to slow to catch up with the fast drying paint, then you have no idea how to draw roan, then you are the perfect candidate to do your first ever repaint and even chose a strawberry roan. Making a roan is surely not easy, - but this is a good start

Thank you, Susanne. It's mostly that the paint dried so fast I missed to make it smooth and thin. I'm also thinking of going back to smooth out the colours of the body, giving it more different hues, and fixing the hooves and muzzle. It looks awfully contrasting grey. I'm still happy with it for being my first repaint. Just need some fixing :)

I like it a lot. Great job. I know some of even the most talented artists here on the forum have trouble with making roans, maybe some of them can give you some tips. Btw, what model is it? For some reason I can't remember...

I hope it is the starting of several repainting projects and you will see that with experience will help you making better and better.

Thank you, Saarloos. Well, I could very much like having some tips on how to make roans (and any other colour for the matter...). If someone sees this they are free to give me advise. Or I might as well go ask someone later.

Roger, thanks, I want to keep doing them but I don't have any more doublets right now except for the 13271 appaloosa (and a damaged non-dubblet wolf). It seems impossible for me to find any models on the local fleamarkets

When you get to the stage then you just ruin it more the more you work on it . That muzzle is terrible. Don't know if I like the legs either, but the overall body looks nicer :)

He's lovely. I've tried a strawberry roan once (was also my first repaint). Yours is much, much better

Looking good! I have a soft spot for roans, and this mold really suits that color.

Want to hear my super easy way (so easy it almost feels like cheating) of painting roans?
1) Paint the entire horse in the base color
2) Add layer after layer after layer after layer of thinned white paint (drybrush) or white pastels.
This adds depth and shading with very little effort, plus it's easy to fix any mistakes that happen along the way.

If you want to keep the muzzle and hooves from looking too grey, add a little burnt sienna (or other orangey-browny shade) to the paint. Afterwards you can shade the hooves with a few layers of very watery black.
Oh, and the white sock means the hoof should be tan rather than grey. :)

What a cool horse, and a fearless colour choice for a first repaint! Roans are tricky to do, though - I've never ever got one right. Tiny brushstrokes with different shades of the roany greys and of the chestnut base colour, applied slowly over each other, usually give a pretty nice variegated effect. Some people do these "hairs" by penciling over the base colour rather than by paint.
If doing individual, different-coloured brushstrokes or ticks feels like too much work (and it is a lot of work!), ground pastel chalk applied over the base paint in gradual layers gives some of the same multihued effect, too (but that needs to be sealed or lacquered in place).

i love him! i think you've done a great job with him, i love the colour! i'd love to have one of your customs in my collection. ^-^

 Yeah, I did it the other way around. Kind of. First I painted it all white, then I put on all the other colours. 
 I had some problems getting the colour of the hooves right, so I kind of gave up. Then a seven year old asked why the horses hooves where blue... Thank you very much for the tips, I will try fixing the hooves of this model :) And I know about the different hooves... but as I said, I kind of gave up. Bad excuse is bad.

 Thank you. I love roans, especially strawberry (red) and blueberry (black), so I really wanted to try painting one as I would like doing several of them. But I don't know if I have the patience to doing all the hairs one by one! Maybe I try it once to see how it looks :)
 I think I have never tried painting with chalk, maybe the name is different in Swedish.

Thanks, it is my first costume (seeing as I can't choose which one of my percherons are to be repainted... or if one of the icelandic's are to be repainted to) so I have no one for sale. Glad you like it tho :)

Looking good! I, too, appreciate the addition of realistically yellowed hairs - it's a detail one too rarely sees attended to in model horse circles. The new paintwork makes the sculpt look ten times better than it ever did to me in its factory colouring.

And that is even better to hear! Thank you for telling me :)

I always tries to make it realistic and it looks wrong, at least in this kind of model, to keep it to white. It is very rare seeing that in real horses. Not to say I don't drool over the white Breyer horses... but still :)

By the way, do anybody have any tips how to paint a flowing two coloured mane, as seen in the dun colouration?. I want to paint the old schleich brown icelandic horse in this colour, but I don't know how to work it with the all to windy mane.
