Found this set of animals in a Toy Fair today-they are made in Germany and think they are made of similar material Elastolin.They seem to have been made for train sets as there is a little picture on the side of the box of the models with a circus train.Here they are in and out of the box.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
