You have a good sense of humor, and of course, Norway is a highly-developed country with many fantastic things, including the Nobel Prize, which is a wonderful thing... cheers

Yes, Norway is a wonderful country, their nature is the most fantastic one can imagine, and Norway have many famous artists like Henrik Ibsen, Edward Munch, Grieg and many more sunny

- but the Nobel Prize, - that is Sweeden Wink

Ooops, of course - Alfred Nobel was Swedish... Embarassed But, Edvard Grieg was a great composer, Munch a wonderful painter and Ibsen, was, well, Ibsen... exclamation

Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyerdahl, great explorers, also come to mind.....

I am reading this topic for the second time now, and i just want to add my few cents extra again here...
We Dutch are very open in mind and speech, and the Scandinavian to i believe...
So no problem for us here, specially not on toy-models(where are we talking about? Shocked )
Well, i visited the USA for about 6 times in the past, from Miami to Los Angeles...
IMHO the Americans are prude on the outside only and outwards to other people which they don't know...
But when you know them better, and are having private contact, the prudeness falls off very quickly, if it wasn't there at all... Rolling Eyes
This doesn't surprise me of course, because the Americans are a modern nation, but there seem to be some inside regulations(not official) that keep people keep their mouths in certain situations...
It is a thing to speak for, as some people like me sometimes don't know the border about how far to go, but ok ,it is my character and culture... Laughing
But again, we do live in the year 2011, and lets be open, and we are here on a Western-european forum!
So for me, funny and cheeky jokes are possible, even with some pictures to go with that, not to harming anybody, or anybody's feelings but just to have a nice laugh together and have fun together to!
I must honestly admitt, that i really have a loud laugh when some people are going or talking around a certain object, as it was not there... geek
Come on people, we live in a free world! cheers

Willy, these days, the USA is very badly split into socio-political groups. People who live on the East and West coasts are very, very different, in general, than people who live in the middle and South of this nation. 30% of Americans are very prudish and the other 70% are just the opposite. People who live in cities are very, very different than people who live in rural areas, at least in terms of general outlook and personal values. There is very little sense of us all being together as one people - Americans. Maybe this is like what people have said about Spain - that its people tend to see themselves as belonging to a region of the country, not as Spanish citizens.

It is sad, but I believe that this is why the USA will not be able to find solutions to its overwhelming problems, and is destined to become a second-rate nation within ten years. People here seem to be more interested in wanting to see bad things happen to other Americans they don't like/agree with, instead of reaching beyond our differences to find solutions to problems together.

But hey, that is just my opinion, which along with a dollar, will get you a cup of cheap coffee here...

Hey Phil, thanks for this reaction! Very Happy
I think i saw and knew this problem already, as i was several times in the States at different places...
Your country is huge, with so many mentalities and heritages, that is almost impossible to have one kind of thought in general.
It would be the same, if you Americans would call us the United States of Europe... Rolling Eyes Shocked

This is exactly what is the problem, the heritage of most of the Americans lies in Europe, so many different people from different cultures...
Even the native Americans had their big differences in the past...
But differences or even making differences are in the human kind, that belongs to our species and the evolution, and we are not the opnly species as we know now...
Another thing i never understood, is the different laws in the different states of the USA, how can this be in the same country? Rolling Eyes
But this is in the different thought and minds of the people who live in those states to of course...
Just think at the American civil war, north and south...

The only thing what botters me, is that those prude people are living in the past more or less, not disrespectfully ment...
There is a kind of truth in their thinking, as there should be some limits in talk and showing things, but just respectfull for eachother.
The first two people that lived on earth recording to the bible were naked, isn't it... Wink
At least as their prudeness is based on the bible...

I think we humans as species are evolving the fastest, specially in our brains, because of the size and possibilities of it...
But not every kind of progress is good of course... Rolling Eyes
We don't need to loose all what was in the past, some things were really better in those days(depending on the age you have). scratch
But a little bit progress in the thoughts and minds of some people would be nice, isn't it? Cool

It's true that we Europeans, being so americanized - we share the same food, clothes, arts, you name it - often don't realize that the US is sociopolitically much more conservative than the EU mainstream. Don't nobody be offended, I don't mean that as any kind of criticism. It's funny when republicans accuse the administration of being super-leftwing, because in reality US politics are far to the right of e.g. Norwegian social democracy (and we're hardly a Stalinist dictatorship).

Willy, I agree with everything you have written here, and your "United States of Europe" analogy is excellent. Also, your point about the differing laws from state to state in the USA is interesting. The "founding fathers" who wrote the USA Constitution, which is the original master legal document for our system of government, intentionally created a system of laws in which there was meant to be a balance between federal (nationwide) law and state law. To this day, there is a huge debate about where the lines should be drawn, and how important each part should be. This was one of the issues which defined the Civil War, and it is a major difference between the political ideologies of the Democratic and Republican political parties.
However, maybe this is not so different from present-day Europe, which now exists as an overall "European Union" and as individual member countries. The question of the degree and rate of European integration is still a big issue in many parts of the EU. Look at the recent votes against full integration in some countries, and the tensions in the EU over financial bailouts for Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, etc. Plus, many Euro countries, from the UK to Denmark to others still use their old currencies, instead of the Euro currency. Even so, Europe is now far more integrated and pulling in the same direction than the USA.

Great points, Sumo. The USA started becoming more politically conservative in the late 1970's, and this process accelerated with the beginning of the "Reagan Revolution" in 1980. President Obama had the most liberal voting record of any senator when elected President, but since then, he has governed from the center-left or pure center. Most countries in Europe are politically far to the left of the USA, and it has been that way for a long time. The Conservative Party in Canada is, on some issues, more liberal than many US Democrats.

The rise of conservative ideology in the USA is linked to the rise of the "religious right" in the USA as one of the most, if not the most, powerful voting blocs. However, many Americans would be very surprised to learn that evangelical Christians in Europe tend to be more politically liberal than their more "secular" counterparts. This may be because of the dominance of the Puritans and Quakers in early American history, which brings us back to some of the points that Willy made.

Very interesting point of view you both...
What shall i say...

At the moment, the Europeans tend to vote very to the right side...
This is because of their discontent, speak displeasure in the things that are happening for the last decade or so... Rolling Eyes
Not only what the gouvernment does, but what we as Dutch people have and must do, and what people from other countries, which migrate in our country since the late 1950's and 1960's have at advantages in compare with them... Rolling Eyes
Lots of the European people have the feeling that they are behind in things in compare to people who migrated here...

We have a lot of very free countries, to which i count the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries, and we accept very very much, but to a certain point of course...

I can't see it happen when we are going to "plant" a Catholic church in Istanbul or Rabat, but they still want a Islamic church in every town here, when not several...
I don't have a problem with that, as long as is doesn't affect our own lives here, but it does, specially after the last happenings in the last decade or so...
The last 2 generations of these people are just doing what they want, they harm people in many ways around here...
Hanging on the street, and bothering all kinds of people, burgling, killling people and so on..., and working is not their hobby at all!
The main group of criminals in our country is to be found under them, about 70%, which says enough!
Not that i am catholic, although i believe in God, i just believe in my own way, which every person should be allowed to, as long as it doesn't hurt or affect other people in their lives, specially not in their own countries...
I did read the bible and k'oran from front to back and again, so i know where i am talking about.
And i was together with a moslim woman for 2 years, so i even learned more about those believes, which are actually 2, the Soni, and the Shietish...
But that is just another thing...

I can give you an example...
I know a guy from S.Korea...
He married a Dutch woman, and wanted to start an own business...
Normally you need money to do that in the first place, secondly you need some diploms or papers to start up your business in the first place...
But this guy got a rentless loan from the gouvernment, started his business without papers, because he was allowed to, and had his pockets full of money in just a few months...
When we Dutch see those things around here, it hurts, because we are restricted to certain rules, which those foreignours are not...
Believe me, i award every man and woman, and hope he or she gets rich or has a decent live, but when they have those advantages in compare to the people of the country itsself, there must be something wrong...
So at the end, no gouvernment is good in everything, and makes his mistakes...
But several different rules in the same country must be very hard, and there is something that must be changed in the USA i think... Rolling Eyes
One country, one law, and the same rules...
How can it be, that the dead sentence is still there in one state, and not in the other... question Rolling Eyes Shocked

I think we can talk endlessly about this here, but if it is the right place... Laughing Twisted Evil
