Today, I have another diorama to show you.

This is a collaboration piece. Jim made the plaster base, which is on an old kitchen cupboard door, and he also made the rock structure. I then painted it, added the flock and have started on the water. It'll have some more brown added to it but I'm just waiting for that layer of glue to dry.

This will be the last that Jim can work on. He lost his job yesterday and obviously trying to find a job is more important. He's given me loads of tips though and loads of supplies for me.

The whole diorama

I then added some moss to the tree to see what it would look like. Looks ok...

The mud and water. Really like the hoof prints he did Very Happy

Great diorama, this gives you lots of room to work with. I like the idea of muddy rivers, and the mud bank with the hoof prints is a great touch. Keep up the good work.

Thank you :)

I've run out of sand and flock so I've started one for my polar bears :)

The hoof printed bank is a really good idea Idea Congratulation.

I think taller grass would be more realistic.

Good luck for Jim Very Happy

Thank you Very Happy

I do have some tall grass but it is quite dark so I didn't think it would match. I'll be getting some garden rope tomorrow :)

Rio, there are several products that are easy to use, for grass I use Woodland Scenics field grass, in natural straw, there are several colors, med green, light green, harvest gold, and natural straw. It is easy to use, I just cut it to the size I want, for my dioramas (I cut it in half), and then use PVA glue (the most common brand of PVA is Elmer's white glue) and let it dry. It makes a very realistic grass for a reasonable price.

The other thing is when I started with my dioramas I use to use colored lichen and dyed foam foliage for model trains. Since then I have found a great produce that is also inexpensive called Selkirk Scenery. Look up their web site under that name and you will find tree pictures and full instructions on how to use it. It is so easy, I can make a tree in about 2 minutes and it looks so much better then anything I ever did before using model train techneques. I started with just one color of green and the branch netting, but now I buy in bulk, 5 colors of leaves at a time and at least 5 sets of branch netting in both sizes. If you look at my newer pictures of dioramas you can see some of the trees I have made. Now my trees are scrub forest which is a savanna habitat, so the trees are very bare, especially in the dry season which is the time of year I am using as a reference, you have a river so your trees should be full, like in the instruction pages.

Thank you for the brilliant tips Very Happy

I do have some of the woodland scenics grass but only in two colours. I've found some online but before that I could only find it at hobbycraft and it was quite expensive Shocked

I'd love to be able to make my own trees as I just can't seem to find the ones I want. I didn't know Jim was making a tree, otherwise I would have found some suitable leaves. The lichen moss was just to see what it would look like in leaf. Of course I would also make the trees a lot bigger !

I'm working on another river diorama so I'll need plenty of trees for that.

Thank you Very Happy

Very nice diorama Rhianna!
Although i think that the rocks should have more rough edges, now it looks like a zoo-enclosure, which is not bad too of course! Laughing
Actually, when i saw the first picture, i thought is was a zoo-enclosure, only the fences are missing(as far as needed)

The idea with the hoof-prints in the mud is just great and very realistic! cheers
The complete mudd-bank looks great anyway!

Phil could give you better advice how to work with different kinds of grasses and materials then me for sure!
I think, that a longer grass-species can have a different colour, that doest matter.
See Phils diorama's for some idea's, it is not always that hard to make it like that.
Just patience, time, the will, and the right materials. scratch

I thought the same, but such rock is more convenient for placing many animals on its terraces.
If the goal is to display as much animals as possible - that's a good solution.

:) Thank you all

Yes, he did find a job Very Happy so he was able to buy a lot more models to paint for his collection.

I haven't done much more with this Diorama because of work. For now, it sits in the living room with a few models on it.
I hope to start a bigger part of it after the new year, right now I am working on my 1/12th stables.

Thank you all for your comments and interest cheers
