Alright, our SUY of September 2019 is on! And to start it, what is better than a beautiful picture of nature of September in the province of Québec?

Made in China ORYCTES NASICORNIS

This figure was clearly modeled after something in the subfamily Coprinae, and is not O. nasicornis.

I reidentified it as COPRIS LUNARIS. Am I closer?

Copris is more likely but probably you won't get a species-name on this. Coprinae, gen. sp. probably best

Copris Lunaris has a horn… this is why I thought it was the closest to my model.

Coprinae is a subfamily with lots of genus and tons of species, all of them have a horn in the front in males. So it's likely to suppose than an invented figurine of a generic antelope has to be a water buffalo just because it have two horns Razz

Also, the antennae of the "ladybug" are modeled clearly after a Melolonthidae, probably Polyphylla sp (tought the body and leg shape are wrong, and obviously the colours too)

The shape of the Carabidae reminds me a Calosoma, tough of course it don't pretend to be realistic Very Happy

The second and third Lucanus cervus are probably made after some species of Prosopocoilus.

I agree the 'ladybug' is a melolonthine.

The carabid doesn't look like a Calosoma; looks like something in the large Harpalitae-complex. Too generic to say for sure.

The lucanid definately has the head sculpted as a Lucanus, but again it's generic.

These are ALL generic. Putting names on any of them is futile, except for the A. dichotoma, only because it has a very specific morphology.

Just one question: what made you think the rhino insect was a COPRINAE and not an ORYCTES? I looked at a lot of pictures and I don't clearly see the difference… Except that Copris have thicker legs, but the makers of the toy could have made thick legs to an Oryctes to make it less easily breakable. So? I'm curious… Look, the toy being a Copris instead of an Oryctes doesn't change much to me, but I'm still curious...

Examples of Calosoma:

The toy beetle:

Generic Harpalinae:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Harpalines are a big subfamily with wide variation in body shape, but generally they tend to be much more "cylindrical". Besides that, they're small and not much striking, so I doubt that any toy company pay attention to them. Calosoma are big, and have the same shape than the toy. Calosoma, besides being big, beautiful and striking, also are extremelly well known, even out of entomological circles, for other reasons than physical appareance. Calosoma is very likely to have made into a toy.

But it's equally probable that the model has not been made after a Calosoma, but only pretend to be a generic beetle, or a generic carabid beetle at best.

Probably you're right. I was not looking at the head, I've just saw the wrong shape and proportions of the mandibles for being a Lucanus, more coincident with other genus. But yes, the head is from a Lucanus.

Again, it's a Coprinae, not necessarily a Copris. About your question, is very patent that the model was made after a Coprinae and not a Dynastidae like Oryctes. The very convex, almost globose body, the short elytra, the clearly marked elytral striae, the pronotal sculpture, the very characteristic flat and wide clypeus (the most definite character), etc etc... all are well one in this figure, that don't looks like a much an elongated Oryctes with plain elytra, no clypeal expansion and different pronotal projections:

NOW I SEE IT!!! Thank you for your explanations.

Still, although you all proved being very well documented on Coleoptera, nobody here has proven he/she had Coleoptera toys to show here. To be honest, when I opened this topic, I expected a little less discussion and a little more toys. So? Anyone else here has Coleoptera toy figures? I would be extremely surprised to learn I'm the only one here to own any...

OK. At the high risk of making BMathison72 laugh his heart out, I started to make Coleoptera figures of my own. OK, they are made with wood, with legs and antennas made with nails, and sculpted in vvveeeeeeerrrrryyyy generic shapes. It's the paint job that mostly says what species is represented.

LEBIA VITTATA
As you can see, the stripes are not that accurate; but the picture I had in the book was small, so I didn't see the exact details. It's only now, on the internet, that I see that there are pale areas between the black stripes of the shell of the insect...
