Saddle billed stork on the diorama

I was out in my workshop yesterday and I decided to put one of the new bird sculptures I made on the diorama to see how it looked. I was going to put them all up (I now have 25 done) but there just wasn't enough room to fit them all in a place where I could get a good photo so I chose a saddle billed stork as the first photo.

I have been all over the world doing talks and seminars on live animals, collection and care in captivity including Canada way back when I was an "expert" I don't do any sort of travelling for model making, I would cost way too much, however I do ship all over the world both small vignettes and center pieces as well as full sized dioramas that are sent in sections that you just fit together once they are in your home. I have done work for dollhouse models, model railroads and most recently a half scale diorama base for a scale model of the occupation of India by the British during colonial times.

Maybe one day I'll order an entire collection of dioramas. After all, There's animals all over the world in differet habitats. LOL!!

I am planning 2 small vignettes, maybe 12 X 12 inches (30 X 30 cm), one of the tundra and the other a desert oasis. I have a great idea for both and before I build or sell bigger dioramas I always do mini dioramas as both practice and so I don't waste the materials on a large scale, some of the material I use is expensive so it helps me to decide if I want to put the time and money into a full sized base after I see the results of a smaller version.

I will post the results and maybe even build photos here on STS so keep checking the forum.

Well, 12x12 would be cheaper and much easier to ship, thats for sure. What do they normally sell for?

It all depends on so many different things, not only the size but what you want on the base, the type and detail of trees, water features, things like that. I have sold complete sections for a model railroad for about $1000 USD per square foot (30 X 30 cm) but that was a complete base with everything and it took over 3 months to make to his standards and specifications. I make dollhouse bases the same size for $65 with grasses and shrubs but no trees or water, they can always be added at later dates and be done by putting a tree here or there until the base is fully decorated. That is usually what I do for the vignettes, there is a basic base with grass and weeds, maybe some rockwork and landscaping, then I add one possibly two large center pieces like a tree or part of a pond or creek and you add the figures. Something like this takes about 3 or 4 weeks so it would be very reasonable priced.

how did you make (or where did you buy) the grass that the used on the floor of this diorama?
