Ponderosa Zoo Empty
PostSubject: Ponderosa Zoo   Ponderosa Zoo EmptySat 29 May 2021, 11:59

Even though I will be visiting this zoo on Wednesday, I am making the topic as I will probably forget otherwise. Razz
Here's some background information on it:

This zoo/petting zoo has a small range of species however it contains some species I need for my archives such as black ghosts (Apteronotus albifrons), Common northern boas (Boa imperator), Zebra fish (Danio rerio) and many more. It'll be the first zoo/safari park/aquarium I'll be visiting this year, and the second one will be on Thursday, and the third sometime in July or August.

Stay posted for photos Very Happy

Waiting to see your photos/review! Apteronotus albifrons, Boa constrictor and Danio rerio are quite common in any pet shop, but I hope that they also have some more rarer species Very Happy

Photos will be coming tomorrow.

I found out the zoo's species via zootierliste (very good website!) but it has been some time since the information for the zoo has been updated on there, in turn this meant there was not nearly as many species/ some missing too! But, I did get 22 new species for my photo archives.

Some of these were:
Cairo spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus albigena) Only holding in Europe!
South American coati (Nasua nasua) This is the first time EVER seeing a coati, I'm quite ashamed I hadn't seen one earlier
Black tree monitor (Varanus becarii) One of the species said not to be held at the zoo. Over half the holdings of this species in Europe are in UK
Arrau river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) One of the species said not to be held at the zoo. One of only 6 held in Europe, only one in the UK

Nice! You always can write to Zootierliste staff for updates on zoo lists (it's like TAI, a website kept by the effort of several people, but trying to be much more exhaustive an up-to-date, but with much more changes to do constantly, so all help is welcome!).

Wonderful images my friend, I especially like the Arrau river turtle photo :)
Believe it or not, being a species common as dirt in zoos, I only saw raccoon dogs once, when I was younger than you, and still without a camera, so I don't have photos of an alive one!

Great photos, looks like a neat facility! Any chance you could explain the black and white ruffed lemur exhibit? I'm curious because it looks like a visitor path behind him, with no real barriers. Were they in an enclosed aviary type exhibit? I've seen lemurs exhibited that way once, and it was really neat, you could walk in with them - but not many American zoos have unprotected contact opportunities with primates and guests.

Many, maybe most, ring-tailed and ruffed lemur exhibits in European zoos are walk-through, Jill. And some are even not enclosures at all, but just the lemurs wandering around a zone from where they don't move, like if they were free-roaming peacocks, such for example as in Artis zoo.

Yes, this enclosure is indeed a walk through. I do not have photos of the full enclosure. However I did find the zoo's YouTube channel in which you can see the exhibit fully: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Cool, thank you! That amazes me that it works well, I don't think I would trust the general public that comes through our park with being within reach of a lemur.
