PostSubject: Some Schleich Animals Living in Retirement (My Collection)   Wed Mar 21, 2012 9:08 am

I still haven't received my much anticipated Vietnamese Pig. But there was some nice light the other day and I decided to use it to snap a few pictures. Here are some recent acquisitions, all retired figures by Schleich.

Anteater

Black Angus Cow and Bull

The calf was present, but didn't make it into the photo.

Armadillo: a thing of beauty

Glum Hyena

His buddies are hanging out in the background (Mojo Fun, Papo, and Safari).

Orangutan Mom and Baby

Thank you Harriet! I love the anteater too. Such a lovely figure. I spent some time after getting it looking at pictures of anteaters and reading about them. This figure does a wonderful job of capturing the likeness of a Giant Anteater.

Thank you Christophe!

I adore the armadillos too. Instead of joining the rest of my figures, the armadillo stays on the endtable at my bedside. It's the one I keep near me at all times so I can just stare at it. The nice thing about this forum is that I know people here understand what I'm talking about. Telling this to other friends usually leads to blank stares.

(I have to say, though, I bought the Safari Armadillo years ago and hated it. I put it in a drawer and I'm not even sure where it is. Hmm. I just find it.)

Ah, Noora, this makes me happy! It is this forum that has made me run out and find many of my favorite figures. I don't know whether to blame you all or thank you. (I'll thank you.)

Bojan, right now, this is my favorite set of Cattle. And I am more keen on collecting Cattle than anything else. (The Swiss Cow is on my wish list. I have a Swiss Bull on the way, but I think it is pretty beat up. We'll see.)

Susanne, I agree completely! I was just saying to a friend that those were the "golden" years for Schleich. No other figures, no matter how much I like them, compare to Schleich figures from between 2000 and 2006 (or thereabouts; I'm not trying to be too precise).

Thank you Vivian! I still have several oldies on my wish list: The European Bison, Oryx Antelope, the Male Orangutan, the old Wolf (14223), and a few horses (which I have mixed feelings about), like the Thoroughbred. The first three on that list though are the ones I want to find in mint condition.

Ha! Carolynn, I'm glad you liked that. He does look really glum (especially compared to the Hyenas by different makers). But I like that. And my day is made by the fact that you've now seen the Armadillo, because it is a knock-down lovely figure by Schleich.

Thank you all for your comments. (Andreas, Martin, Arnaud, and others whose names I don't know yet.) I almost tried to "quote" and respond to everyone, but this is already way too long and I hope you understand.

Another recent member of my schleich retirement home. He's a little scuffed, but somehow, that suits him. (Notice one of his natural predators in the background. But the muskox does not fear the arctic wolf. The muskox fears nothing! ...except maybe a bath.)

And here are some Red Deer Family Photos. I recently acquired the older Stag (14248). The moment I pulled him out of the box and saw him in person, I was wowed. He cuts an impressive figure: gigantic antlers, and in general he seems very large. It was only after taking the photos that I realized the replacement Stag does fit better with the family. They agree in color and texture. So perhaps it wasn't a complete mistake for Schleich to retire the older stag and introduce the new one.

Now: my badgers. I start with my retirement home badger. He is in beautiful condition and I was thrilled to see how well preserved he was. Worth every penny on eBay.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Next, grandpa Badger next to Schleich's more recent badger. They are very different and honestly I really like both. There is something lovely about the older model that is special, but I am still very fond of the newer figure.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The newer Schleich and the badger by Mojo Fun are quite similar. I am a huge fan of Mojo and frankly, if it were not for my irrational affection for Schleich, I would probably prefer Mojo figures over anything else. But this is one case where putting the Schleich and the Mojo next to each other does not favor the Mojo. I like the figure okay; I just like the Schleich much better. However, I think part of the issue is that the particular Mojo Badger I have isn't painted very well. In particular, the white paint on its face is caked on. Perhaps others are not painted similarly and this is rather an issue peculiar to my figure. In any case, the sculpture itself seems great.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Finally, two group shots. In the first picture below, from left to right: Safari's American Badger, Schleich (1993-2001, 14224), Schleich (2011-present, 14650), and Mojo Fun.

You're right, the old badger is indeed a very charming model and it's also the first time I see the Mojo Badger, but somehow it looks strange... scratch The current Schleich Badger is out of competition,of course Very Happy

Thank you Harriet! The Muskox is pretty amazing. It was at the top of my wish list of retired Schleich animals. Now I need the European Bison and the Male Orangutan (most recent). I haven't seen either of those pop up on eBay any time recently. But I suppose it's just a matter of time. (cross my fingers. is there an emoticon for that?...[looking]...nope. I'll use this as my slightly crazed "hopeful" face What a Face .)

It's true about the Mojo Fun Badger! I really love Mojo figures, but this Badger is perhaps a little too cutesy. I don't know what it is. I like realistic woodland critters. No cutesy critters for me. Very Happy

I recently acquired the Papo Black Rhinoceros. It turned out to be even better in person than it appeared in photos (which is pretty amazing because it is awesome in photos). But one thing that surprised me a little was its size. It is pretty much exactly the same size as Schleich's male Black Rhinoceros (14394). This surprised me for two reasons: (1) In general, Papo figures seem to be slightly larger than Schleich figures (not always, but often). (2) The Papo Hippopotamus is so much larger than the Schleich Hippopotamus. Here are some pictures.

First, the Papo Rhinoceros (50066) by itself. Wow.

Now the Papo (50066) and the Schleich Black Rhinoceroses (14394), lined up nose to tail. They are really very similar in size. And I think they are both great figures.

But notice how much larger the Papo Hippopotamus (50051) is than the Schleich Male Hippopotamus (14132). (I don't have the retired female, so I can't compare.) I suspect this topic has been already discussed a lot, but it seems that the Schleich Hippopotamus is a bit small. Well, it is perhaps about the right size compared to the elephants, but a bit small compared to the Rhino.

Notice also the relative sizes of the Schleich Koala (14303) and the Koala by [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]" Collection. The Schleich always seemed a bit too big for my taste. I like the size of Science & Nature's figure better, but I think I prefer the sculpting and paintwork of the Schleich.

Science & Nature's collection is a great set of figures. I know everyone here probably owns them already, but I took some pictures of some of my favorites anyway.

The Numbat

The Possum

And the Bilby
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

They are all next to the Schleich Koala for a size comparison. (I own the "small" figures rather than the "large" ones.)

Congratulations on your fabulous Papo rhino, it's such an awesome figurine!! cheers

I was very lucky to get the musk ox off eBay for only a couple of pounds! I hope you find the Wisent, another favourite of mine drunken

I love the Numbat by science and nature, it has such a cute face - I have the koala but was thinking of repainting it.

It is odd the Papo rhino is the same size as the Schleich, when the hippo is so big.

Ack. The idea of acquiring Musk Ox for that cheap makes me envious. (But envious in the happy-for-you way, and not the mean sort of envy. I think that makes me "light-aqua with envy" rather than green.)

I'd love to see the koala repainted by you! That would be great!

Scott, I lost this great topic with fantastic pictures and some of nicest Schleich figures of ever. :)
In fact old designers from the brand had a particular style that although many figures ended without a realistic looking, they were always charming and with a pleasant cuteness. But sometimes the result was also realistic as we see in the European bison, musk ox or mountain goat that you are not showing here. :)
But, some although not realistic, like the hyena, anteater, old badger, etc. are nice figuresdue to their atractive design.
Schleich now is in a confusion, they try to make the figures more realistic but they are less atractive but every rule has some delicious exceptions as it happens with the new badger. It is one of my top10 Schleich, much better than the old one and also than Mojo's and CollectA. A very good figure. :)
I hope you are lucky with Schleich oryx, usually a very wanted old Schleich figure but in my opinion it is only atractive but completly wrong in terms of realism. Very far from a real animal.
I also hope to find a way to the armadillo that is still missing in my collection! bounce Very Happy
Congratulations for all of these great figures and thanks for sharing with us. Very Happy
