The first of many sables was mailed to me yesterday: the Safari bull Sable. Pictures do not do it justice. For an animal that is mostly black with white tones, the detail ia amazing. I also never knew that the back of the Sable's ears are a tan color--not black. At least that is what this one presents. Any truth to that? I never really looked behind a sable's ear!lol! Well, here he is:

Here he is compared to his cousin, the Roan Antelope (Noah's Pal version)

Congratulations for your Safari sable antelope! After a long time participating in the review of the Mojo sable it is relatively easy to see what is wrong in that figure. But, more important is that I can also see what is well done and the figure is in general very good! :)
Harriet posted Mojo's [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and you can see the same detail in the ears! :)
Safari and Mojo take this hobby seriously in the scientific way, a detail that easily would be negleted by Schleich or Papo where the apealing looking of the figure is more important than these details! Very Happy
In my wish list, thanks for your beautiful pictures! sunny

I'm certainly looking forward to getting it (the only place that seems to be selling it online is Safari's own site), but I'm also really looking forward to this one as well and think it represents some serious competition:

I know that there was not a single sable in the market before and now we have 3 or 4 excelent figures! :)
I'm sure this forum has a huge responsability in it and STS is already a reference for some of the most important brands in the market. cheers

For anyone interested, I just got the Sable in my hands, and I calculated the scale to be exactly 1:22.4 (representing a maximum sized bull), so that's a perfect fit for the Schleich Zebras and Lions, etc. Unfortunately, the Roan Antelopes from Noah's Pals are between 1:22 - 1:25, so while they do fit with this Sable, they represent animals that are at the minimum range in size.

Also, I got the new Wild Safari White-tailed Deer male & female. I'll try to post pics later. The male is around 1:16 scale, so I assume the female is supposed to be as well. What does that mean? Well, it means that for accurately scaled displays, it'll look good next to many Wild Safari figures (like the Black Bear, Wolves, Cougar, Coyote, etc.), but not the new Sable, and not many Schleich wildlife. Both deer are really beautiful figures. Their colors are rich and sharp, lot's of contrasts and shading. Definitely ideal representations of what could be considered by many people to be rather boring, run-of-the-mill animals. So two thumbs up for the new Whitetail Deer.

I like Whitetail Deers and I don't think they're boring, maybe what we all want is some other Deers as well, like the Sika Deer.
Pictures on their website and some other sites on the net also look promising. I will definitely buy this year's models. Very Happy

I don't find them boring, either haha. I'd also like some other deer, but until then, I'll definitely settle for these two new figures. They look identical to pictures of them on the Safari website, as does the Sable, really. The only new figure that looks different from how it is pictured online is the Blacktip Reef Shark, which is a dark brown body color as opposed to the grey color I was expecting. Otherwise, it's a really great figure, but the color is really dark, like a light chocolate color. While some Blacktip Reef Sharks are brown, I've not see any that are quite as dark as the figure is. I'm sure that Safari will repaint it in the future to make it more grey in color, so I'll have to buy it again haha.

They also updated the Wild Safari Hammerhead Shark paint scheme, making it identical in color to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Great Hammerhead Shark figure. It's very well done, a few highlights here and there to distinguish it. Since Hammerheads are my favorite, I had to pick one up Very Happy

I want a lot to see the white-tailed deer. It looks really promissing in catalogue pictures. The stag is surely better than previous one and also than Schleich and Mojo's.

Thanks Shawn!! I ended up ordering the Safari Sable from a museum store (through eBay). It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm pretty excited.

This is fantastic news and I'm really looking forward to the pictures of the Whitetailed Deer. I was excited about them when I saw pictures on line, but it sounds like they are even better! When Safari does figures right, they really do amazing work!

Definitely post pictures! and Congratulations!!

Ok, a couple of bad cellphone photos, as promised. I was going to crop them, but my photo editing program keeps crashing. So here they are, in their unedited glory.

First up, the Sable with some other 1:22 scale figures so you can see how it compares.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I'm not sure how that Colorata Serval found himself in that shot - he's only scale 1:21 ( Shocked Mad Rolling Eyes )

Next up: 1:22 scale African Ungulates:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Some one-on-one's:

Sable Antelope (Hippotragus niger) and Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sable (Hippotragus niger) and Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I chose the older Schleich figure over the newer one because I didn't have the newer one handy

Ok, so that's enough of the Sable. Now for the new White-tailed Deer. Again, I was planning to crop these, but my program isn't working tonight ( Evil or Very Mad ). If anyone can crop these and wants to either edit in post or repost the cropped pix, that would probably help. In the meantime:

1:15 scale North American Wildlife Display
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Notice the 2012 Wild Safari White-tailed Deer figures on the lower shelf, right hand side with other denizens of the Eastern deciduous forests (Red Fox, American Black Bear, Eastern Coyote, Northern Raccoon).

Hey Thanks! Those look a lot better cropped! I was using a different computer, and a different photo editing program, from what I usually do to post pictures, and the one I was using just did not want to cooperate. So I appreciate you taking care of it for me. I usually take pictures with my cell phone from a decent distance from the figure and then crop them because using zoom on a cell phone can make the photos look grainy. So thanks.

Oh, and my name is Chad, but I respond just as well to sphyrna Very Happy

They are definitely two very different figures. First is the obvious: Mojo's is more flat matte vs. Safari's, which is matte or semi-gloss. What's the difference? Flat matte resists glare better than regular matte finish, and much better than semi-gloss. Also, Safari's appears very "handpainted," while Mojo's appears more airbrushed. Not that Mojo's aren't handpainted - as far as I know they are. What I mean is that if I were to sit down with a Sable antelope figure, a few acrylic paints, and some brushes, I could easily replicate Safari's crisp, neat paintjob. White parts are painted white, black parts are black, and tan parts are tan. There's no transition and no shading. It would be much more difficult to replicate Mojo's paintjob, predominately because it looks airbrushed - which is to say that the color is applied from the center out. So for instance, when airbrushing the white belly, they heaviest paint application is in the center of the belly, and the airbrush is moved outward toward the flanks and legs from there. The overall effect provides transition zones between the colors. Suffice to say, Mojo's likely represents a more natural appearance vs. Safari's more romanticized appearance. They are both very accurate, but the paint applications are different. Can't say I prefer one over the other right now, though. Both are pretty freakin' cool looking!

I wished my English was good enough to explain something like you did! Laughing
I still don't have the Safari one but I can warrant that the rich texture of the Mojo's sable also helps a lot in that effect. What doesn't help is the static pose but that was the choice of the team envolved in the review and not a choice of the brand.
I confess I never thought before that a figure with the head turned like all Schleich cows would make such a difference for so many collectors. I expected it more for general buyers like children. flower
Anyway, in dioramas, the bored pose of the Mojo figure works better to make a herd and Safari works better in pictures lokking directly to the camera showing his body! Rolling Eyes
It is nice to have 3 different sables, I continue saying that all of them look very good and surely one of them will fit in individual tastes, because of the pose, the paintwork, size or even because of what is written in the belly! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thank you Chad. This is a really nice description of the paintwork on each. Much appreciated!

Absolutely love the Safari Sable antelope; thank you for sharing such superb photos. So many different antelopes by different brands anticipated this year. As yet alas, I haven't been able to find a single one of them.

We recently ordered some Safari Sable Antelopes when a customer made a special request for some figures I was out of stock on. Not trying to be pushy, just letting everyone know it's available! :)
