I was under the impression that because they hadn't made any change to the Penguin Chicks figurine, one could really go either way on what you call them. I still see them referred to as the 'King Penguin Chicks' quite regularly and that seems correct.

In the case of the King Penguin, 14617, and Emperor Penguin, 14652, even though the mold seems to be pretty much the same, the paintwork is obviously different so as to reflect the difference between the King and Emperor Penguins. As indicated here, Schleich has given them separate identifying model numbers.

But the model number they used for the Chicks during the year they produced the King Penguin Adult (14617) -- namely, 14618 -- remains the same, even though they now call model number 14618 'Emperor Penguin Chicks' on their website.

I'd be curious to know what the Schleich heavy-weights have to say about this. Do we just go along with Schleich and start calling 14618 'Emperor Chicks' even though in 2010 model number 14618 was a set of King Penguin Chicks?

Scott, maybe people is a little tired of reading that from me but here goes:
Sorry Kristie, the same penguins novel again.

1982:
Schleich releases its first penguin that is an imaginary penguin, maybe inspired in a subadulte of an Emperor penguin.
1993:
Is released a more realistic figure (14140), called king penguin but with the traditional coloring of an Emperor. 15 years in the market with a wrong name or painting.
2010:
Schleich replaces the old and successful mistake for a new penguin (14617), a more correct King penguin, in my opinion the best Schleich penguin;
unfortunately, under Happy Feet fever, they also introduce some chicks that are Emperor penguins (14618) without any doubt once it is easier to distinguish chicks than adultes. So we have a family where the parent is from a different species than the chick, something like to have a lion and lioness taking care of young tigers.
2011:
Schleich identifies the mistake, it is not prestigious to have an adulte king penguin taking care of Emperor chicks, so they repainted the king penguin to an emperorand change the reference to 14652; and introduce a new figure, an Emperor with chick (14632); obviously they change the name of the chicks from King to Emperor although it is exactly the same figure.

Kristie, thanks for telling about this topic that I was missing! pale Sleep
Again I must say that your pictures are terrific and that Schleich figures have a different light under your camera. sunny
The giant panda looks a cartoon in catalogue and in your picture we see the rich shape and texture of this figure. Other figures are also very nice, mainly the yak and of course the old giraffes family. Very Schleichy for my taste but very charming. Nice that the Chinese kid I sent to you found a Deutsch sister! flower I see you love the penguin confusion! Laughing It gives a little of story to the figures, isn't it? Wink

Thank you Roger!! That is really interesting! (Hopefully people aren't tired of reading it; it is new information to me.)

When Noora put up the pictures of the King and Emperor chicks and I saw how different they looked, I was really surprised. It turns out, one just can't call those Schleich chicks 'King penguins'.

I'm glad the information is useful for you. The bad part of this story is that we don't have king penguins in regular brands and Schleich ended releasing the same penguin that is present in other brands. Fortunately Safari give us a great range of penguin species and CollectA is also diversifying a little with the gentoo and rockhopper. Colorata penguins set is in fact the king of penguins and I hope someday to have it in my collection. king

Wow! They are really nice! The "little penguins" are too cute!

I can dream along with Roger about this set. Meantime, I look forward to adding some of the CollectA penguins to my collection.

Collecta has REALLY gotten my attention lately. So many of their figures are on my wishlist! :)

I agree completely about the Colorata set! I don't have it -- I only have the reptile set -- but the penguin set looks amazing with so many types. It's too bad they are so pricey on eBay. But I will probably eventually cave and get it.

Now if I can get lucky enough to accidentally find the "mane up" version. Very Happy

Congratulations Kristie! It would sound silly for you but how can I look at a shire toy and see that it is not a Clydesdale? I know it is obvious for most of you but I still need a tip! geek flower

It is a WONDERFUL model, Kristie cheers
CONGRATULATIONS flower
I think this one is an important part of the success of the good, old Schleich horses drunken

It is not silly at all !
The two breeds have been mixed during the 20th century, - Shire has given size and fetlocs volume to the Clydesdales. And Clydesdales have given elegance to Shires.

In the old days a Clydesdale was a more elegant, heavy horses.
The Shire was enormously large and heavy.

If you see an old model of a very heavy horse ( on the model you can not see the size) with very strong, rather long legs ( or short body, which made the legs look long), it is usually a Shire.
Also the Clydesdale is not nearly as common as the Shire, there are not many old models of Clydesdales, I think scratch

Thank you friends!

Roger, I see that Susanne has answered your question. :) I was going to say that Shires typically are larger and have more feathering on the legs than a Clydesdale.
A good comparison is the old Breyer Shire to the Clydesdale....

Shire (this is not my photo...)

Clydesdale (Susanne's Clydesdale)

Now how do *I* know that it is a Schleich Shire and not a Clydesdale? Because it is identified as "Schleich Shire". Laughing

Very funny indeed!
Thanks Kristie and Susanne for your interesting remarks. It looks it is not as easy as I thought. But I believe that with a little patience I'll be able of identifying some more breeds! flower flower

Well, and again, here in America the Shire breed is being bred to be taller and more refined. I hate that, but that's what we crazy Americans do. But in general, Shires are overall bigger and have more feathering. Wink

Kristie , these pics. are exclusively posted for you - WAGON with horses from WILD WEST

This model is simply mind blowing and stands out as a typical example for Schleich's uncompromising quality and schleich men's extraordinary craftsman ship .

I always quote " east or west Schleich is the best "
