PostSubject: Lovely lizzards :-)   Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:03 pm

Over a period I got some nice "lizzards".
They aren`t easy to take good pictures of, but today the weather was right Very Happy

I put "Lizzard" in brackets, because strictly speaking they are various families Rolling Eyes

Here Westie shows us the Tuatara and the thorny devil.

The Tuatara isn`t even a reptile. He is a Sphenodondans ( !), and the only living member of this family, thus sometimes called a living fossile.
Westie keeps well out of the reach of the Tuatara, because he has strong jaws with sharp teeth !

In spite of his looks, the thorny devil is less dangerous Wink

They are both very well camouflaged. Wink
The Thorny Devil even has a " false face" on the back of his neck to confuse any aggressor.

Another strange creature : The frilled lizzard.
Isn`t he fabulous ?

The above models are sold as Science & Nature-models.
The Tuatara, however is only marked "China", and is from the "New Zealand Wildlife Collection"

Bullyland made a Basilisk this year.
The colour is a bit strange, burt very decorative Laughing
Well, I think he is a lovely model and like him very much drunken

No, no, Christophe, Tuantara isn`t a reptile, - as I write : The Tuatara isn`t even a reptile. He is a Sphenodondans study

It is such a fantastic animal, - I remeber reading how Gerald Durrell visited a remote island when visting New Zealand, and these strange creature held him spellbound so they almost had to carry him back to the boat Laughing

Susanne, Tuatara is the only extant animal of the order Sphenodontia.

The sphenodontia is an order of the Class Reptilia, especially from the superorder Lepidosauria which are the reptiles with overlapping scales.

They are reptiles, like lizzards, crocoberts... Wink

Laughing Laughing Yes, I'm also not a lizard! Crying or Very sad
Susanne, Christophe is right although these concepts result confuse in some languages.
They are indeed not lizard although they look like them. Anyway they are reptiles! It is a little confuse to think that a ichtyosaurus is a reptile and procynosuchus and dimetrodon are not! What a Face
Scientists are even crazier than collectors! Laughing Am I exagerating? Poor scientists! Laughing
Thanks for showing such nice pictures and impressive figures.
That's curious that I don't collect reptiles and most of them in my collection are gifts from you and other members of the forum. Ahahah! Very Happy Well, I don't collect reptiles except turtles, tortoises, crocodilians, etc., etc. Laughing

Great figures Susanne! Thank you for the pictures! I especially like the Frilled Lizard and it is going on my wish list for sure. Is this the same Science and Nature company that makes the Australian wildlife figures, like the Numbat, possum, and kiwi? Or a different company? And if you dont mind me asking, how big is the frilled lizard in comparison to, say, the lizard schleich released this year?

(sorry for all the questions!)

Lovely additions Susanne!

Eventhough I'm not a reptile collector, that basilisk is very tempting : )
Also, the tuatara's eyes are so cute! <3

Not the best of pictures. There isn`t much light today, so the white line on the back of the Tuatara is almost invisible ( funny how it is camuflage, isn`t it ? ) Rolling Eyes

But you can see the size, I hope Wink
