PostSubject: Holy crap, it's a liger!   Mon Jul 02, 2012 8:26 pm

Some time ago I bought a bag of cheapo figures that on further inspection turned out to be TMs. The models are really nice, save that obnoxious seam around the middle that seems to be the official "cheapie" hallmark. Of course they're badly painted, so this weekend I decided to get started on the tiger.

However, something was wrong. As nice as the model is, something about it just doesn't say "tiger". The coat is a little too smooth, the head a little untigerish somehow - and while it's the same size as the Schleich male, it looks bigger.
And all of a sudden it came to me: Why not paint a liger?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] are the result of a female tiger mating with a male lion, something that almost exclusively happens in zoos. Appearance-wise they look like a little bit of both, but huge (and often pretty dang fat).
Morphologically this one seems pretty close to the mark, though I think her color turned out a little too orange.

I should add that her tail isn't done yet, I had to hold on to it while painting.

With Schleich for scale. See how she doesn't look completely tigerish around the face? I haven't figured out why that is yet - maybe the chin is a little big, or the ruff too small?

It's a she - or at least that's my decision based on the absence of visible junk. Laughing (Then again, the male lion doesn't have any either... these models must be adapted for the American market. Wink )

That really looks like a Liger, Sumo! Fantastic painting! It is spot on.

After reading this I thought 'surely at least Safari isn't so prudish', but after a cursory search, I found only one Safari model that represented a male in (what appeared to be) an anatomically correct way: The recent Sable. Sigh. (I don't have any Safari Bulls though. That would be the real test.)

Regarding the sex of your Liger, I initially saw one picture of a male liger that seemed to have a bit of a mane. But then I noticed that pretty much every other male liger didn't, so that didn't help either. (In particular, the famous [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] has no mane. He is, by the way, frighteningly gigantic; holy crap.)

Sumo it's awesome, I love it! What a brilliant idea to make it into a Liger. I really like this sculpt, I don't suppose you have a photo of what is originally looked like?

Not at the moment, but I'm planning to go look for another one tomorrow! For now, you can picture the typical sloppy paintjob most of these cheapo sets have.

(I think the tiger is the best in this lot... The lion... well, there's no nice way of putting this, he looks like Kenny the inbred tiger. There's a date with a craft knife and some apoxie in his imminent future.)

Edit: Ok, so I went ahead with the lion. Apparently in a crazy resculpting frenzy. Rolling Eyes

Thanks! Very Happy

The tiger gene pool is really more of a shallow puddle at this point, so breeding hybrids like this might be less damaging to the animals themselves than the wildly unethical color breeding currently going on in many zoos. And if that's not crazy I don't know what is. Sad

That Schleich is due for a repaint any day now...

Right! Can't wait to see it!
I'll have to keep an eye out for the tiger on eBay, there's also another lion I'd like to get, I really like their sculpting work.

Thank you, Sumo! You took me back fifty-four years, to my 10 year old self staring at "Ruth", the Liger at the Belle Vue Zoo.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This is an old, hand-coloured print of a Liger which was shown in Edinburgh in 1827.

Ooh, you've seen one IRL? Lucky!
I've spent hours browsing [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which has some nice (though frustratingly small) pictures of all sorts of neat animals.
