PostSubject: I sculpted something again?   Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:51 pm

What am I, some kind of... sculptor person? Laughing
Well, this time it's a lion - and a mystery.
You see, I'm pretty sure I stole this pose from some really well-known piece of statuary... but what, where, and by whom? Anyone? confused

You could call this a mixed media project. If there's one thing I stink at (well, one of many) it's making armatures. So this time I decided to try a different approach. I didn't wire anything, apart from the forelegs, instead I made a rough body shape from Cernit (sculpey). The advantage to bakeable clays is that they set quickly (15-30 minutes in the oven) so you can start sculpting over that in something self-hardening. I used Apoxie for the smooth parts and Green Stuff for the hair and detail. The whole thing was an experiment, and it worked rather well. Thanks to the Cernit I had a "skeleton" that wouldn't warp or deform once I started adding detail, and by working in stages I could ensure there was always a hardened portion I could hold on to (the number of times I've accidentally smooshed one body part while shaping another...).
Apologies for the bad photo, I just slapped some gesso on so he wouldn't be three different colors. He looks somewhat bedraggled to begin with, but the wet primer doesn't exactly help...

Almost done!

Mr Lion, why so gloomy? Did you perhaps hear about the study that confirms that lionesses prefer darker-maned males? Laughing
(Look, the head is almost symmetrical!)

At least the result is not bad. To me it look more like a horse mane with a lion head.

Aww, thanks! If you have any critiques I'd love to hear them.
I've just started another sculpt, which - if it doesn't go completely pearshaped, which it may - will be my first ever attempt at a standing model.

A bad photo of my current project... here you can see all 3 layers of sculpting.

This time I used both wire and cardboard(!) in the legs just to keep him semi-upright.

I had to go back and see your lions again, Sumo. Very Happy

They have something special, which makes them stay in my mind, - a special charm and movement, and a dash of subdued humor . Wink

Just like your drawings, they are very uniquely Sumo-style cheers

I love old (19th c. and earlier) wildlife illustrations, which tend to be rather stylized - I guess my art shows the influence.
Am currently trying to paint this big troublemaker, and it's not going at all well. *grumblegrumblestupidstreakywhitegessogrumblegrumble* Yellowish animals are my least favorite to paint anyway... do you think I should give up and try for something unrealistic instead, maybe bronze or some other deco color?

Well, he's done... and not looking too happy about it!

Well, I say done... still needs some detailwork on the hair, but as I mentioned I'm considering painting over the whole thing anyway.

Sumo, your work is very interesting but is not easy to make a suggestion when it is a pure personal exercise.
Honestly the only point is that I agree with you. The painting is not according with the kind of sculpture you idealised although it looks very well painted. Suddenly you turned a enigmatic and comtemplating statue in a somewhat toy looking figure. The bronze coloring would work perfect but now I think it is finished and it has a remarkable symbolism. Congratulations, you have a very personal touch and that's what makes something look artistic! Very Happy
