Huh. Dunno how that happened... but it seems I've assembled quite a collection of the Newray dogs.
Mostly it's from buying sets containing one model I really like, and then not being able to unload the rest...
at any rate, that must be where I got these little yappy ones. The only ones I recall buying are the bull terriers and bulldog.

Don't get me wrong, all the models are nice (competently sculpted, if not well finished - crap paint aside, their seams are pretty nasty) and I really like their big dogs. The bullies and mastiffish breeds are my favorites regardless of brand, and Newray's staffie and American bulldog are very good indeed.

The rottweiler... not quite their best model perhaps, but he looks a lot better with a lick of paint.

And then there's the doberman. Truth be told, I've always found them a little intimidating (which I know is unfair, I've never met one in real life) but dang, it's one good-looking dog. However, it's no better painted than the rottie... and when I was applying the light grey primer, I started thinking a light color would look pretty awesome on this model. Breed standard sticklers, look away now. tongue

I realize this isn't a real dobie color, in fact it's probably not any kind of dog color, but doesn't it look kinda cool? I have another one as well, and as much as I'd like to say he'll be painted a more realistic color, I rather doubt it...

Uuuu, I like the AmStaff/APBT, could you post few more pictures?
SBT is very nice also, but that's not the most common color for them...

You could make a blue Dobie! I've only seen a few blues(as well as a few Isabellas(Fawn colored).
Good repaint on the Rott! I like their American Staffordshire Terrier as well!

I was all set to paint a blue one until I realized they were just roan on top of the usual black/tan pattern - I was hoping for something all blue, without the pangare.
*facepalm* And now I find myself using equine terms again because I don't know jack about dogs... (By roan I mean a dark basecoat with white hairs evenly distributed throughout, and pangare is the lighter hair around the eyes, muzzle, and groin - the tan parts of a black and tan dog. If someone could tell me what the actual dog patterns are called, it'd be much appreciated!)

I think I might try a fawn one, though! That's basically weimaraner colored, isn't it?

Not a fan of the Isabella(fawn), however the traditional black/tan or red/tan are very striking!

Wanna hear how big a geek I am? I've spent the afternoon mulling over what sort of breed combo might conceivably result in my dark-skinned light grey dobe. I'm thinking an outcross to something like irish wolfhound, followed by a prolonged period of breeding back to a more dobermanlike shape (because no first generation cross is that typey - that's like people who breed fjords to friesians and expect to get a dun-colored baroque horse right away). There doesn't seem to be a way for this dog to have that color without a serious breeding program - in other words the explanation I'm going with is that mine hails from a parallel universe where this has in fact happened. Laughing

Warning: this is your brain on model horses. You see, when you show a model with an atypical color you have to rationalize it - check out the "Breed assignment, genetics, color" subforum on Blab for examples - and it gets to be a habit after a while.

Very interesting Sumo! I've spent a long time with a dobberman before the Boxer, both dogs from my old sister! While the boxer was always sitted down the dobberman was always running, it's an incredible dog!

Blue Dobies are not roan. There are no white hairs. The color is hard to describe. The blue color is from a dilution gene on the black pigment, it's probably the best example of color dilution, since a blue really does look like a black dog that's sort of faded, rather than looking like it's a completely different color. My friend raised blue Dobies, and I always thought they looked like they needed a good dusting! I never did get quite used to the color.
The fawn/Isabella color to me never screamed "dilute" the way blue did, but it's still an unusual color. Blues and fawns are more inclined to have skin or hair issues than blacks and reds. Their coats even feel different.

Sorry, a fawn has rust markings too, no solid colored Dobies for you. Crying or Very sad

Great blog !

About horse colours and dog colours, - be careful Wink - I have a friend who has a university degree in Zoology, and who has raised dogs for more than 50 years.
She and I always discussed colour genes, sometimes quite vigorously Evil or Very Mad Twisted Evil Mad

Untill we realised that she talked about dogs, and I talked about horses.
It seems that they have quite different patterns of inheritance of colours.

For one, the gene b ( not-black) has never been prooved in horses, whereas it gives the chocolate colour in black dogs. etc, etc.

Another fun thing is, that the C-locus which in horses give palomino etc, - and double dilute gives blue-eyed-creams, - that is the gene that give masked cats like in siamese kitties cat cheers

Well, enough of this, - I know it bores most of our friends so much that they fall off the chair Sleep Sleep Sleep Wink

Oh BTW, the three little ones in the front row (schnauzer, spaniel, terrier) are up for grabs if anyone wants them! There's also a corgi which I'm currently repainting.

not me! i I love you color genetics! I know very little, but it's fascinating.
Doberman color is about as easy as it gets.
Cat color on the other hand... I went to a museum exhibit on cats and there was a huge wall with a chart of cat color gene interaction, and a computer terminal to have you guess the color of kittens from various color parents. The bottom line was, don't even bother trying to guess unless it's a breed with a very restricted color gene pool like Russian Blue.
