Very nice figure, on the photos looks more realistic than the Schleich one. Until now I have no Mojo in my collection but this is probably my second Mojo 2013 (bird again!) figure on my wishlist :)

Wow, Mojö is becoming the best birds brand, after the Emu, this one is just stunning! Hopefully there are more to come, maybe Crowned Crane or the Secretary Bird from the FB voting!

I think griffon came from griffin a mythical hybrid creature? That suits this bird I think? It has eaglelike bill and lionlike mane? scratch
Just speculation Laughing

Unfortunately there is no more birds this year. These 2 birds from FB/STS choices are really hard to make and very beautiful species. Probably they'll be introduced in 2014? The emu was also projected to 2012 and Mojo wanted to give us a figure with highest quality standards and decided to release it only in 2013. I think it worth to wait. Very Happy
I know penguins are sometimes a little appart when talking about birds but I think Mojo is launching three great birds if we don't forget the Gentoo! Very Happy

I also don't know yet which one is the best. I'm afraid I need to get both! Laughing
However, knowing that you are a young boy still very attached to Schleich and with an increasing interest in animals. I must say that it is great that you feel confortable choosing a figure from a brand you're not used with. That's freedom, that's personality! Very Happy

I am just excited that the one from Schleich won't be so lonely being my first and only vulture to my collection anymore! I like how the bird looks very noble. Great details again and I love teh texture on Mojo's animals now. Great release Mojo! (and I am soooo happy that you decided to break the whole waiting til next week coffee break! Laughing )

Susanne, I think people already helped before but here goes my contribution. Very Happy
All these words have origin in latin, greek or both and griffon is not an exception. Then, in Middle French it turned in grifon and in middle English in griffoun. It means curled, curved or having a hooked nose. study
In Portugal we call grifo to the griffin but also to this specific vulture. Very Happy
Curiously, we also call grifo to a bristled chicken! Laughing I hope my googling was helpful. Now, I need to know why do you call goose vulture to this bird? Isn't a turkey vulture already enough for an aviary? Wink

Very interesting to know the name in all these languages and why it is also called a goose vulture. Very Happy
An interesting point of this figure is also the pose, thvultures, are associated with a negative reputation. It is so evident that they are often replaced by eagles in biblical and other historical documents. It happens although it is obvious sometimes that those are references to vultures. Mojo, gave to the figure, not the usual "carrion" pose but an imperial pose used to these emblematic eagles! Obviously this is a vigilant pose, commonly observed in historical times, where vultures were a common presence among occidental civilizations.I hope it works to demystify this traditional repugnance among new generations. Idea

It's rather strange indeed, but both in Russian, Ukrainian and Polish languages this bird isn't called nor grif, neither vulture. It's a "syp" here...
The word "syp" is derived from the Russian "sipet'" (to have a frog in throat). Maybe the voice of this bird is somewhat special?
Here's a link for Russian-speaking friends: http://earaza.ru/wps/wp-content/uploads/WildBirds12_13.pdf (see page 87).

In Catalan it's "voltor comú" or simply "voltor" that means just "common vulture". In Spanish is also connected with its color, its name is "buitre leonado" that means "vulture with lion colour".

It is really interesting. As it is called sip in Western Asia, it is natural seeing derivations of these words in languages of western Europe. Anyway I also have no idea the origin of the word. Very Happy
Also it is great to see that in some languages the color determines the name what matches perfectly with the scientific name Gyps fulvus once fulvus is a reference to the sandy color. study
I told previously the name grifo for Portuguese language but here we always use a lot of names to the same species what turns sometimes very confuse to read about them. Here we also call it abutre fouveiro that means also fawn vulture. Very Happy

Here, it's called "Beloglavi sup". Beloglavi means White-headed but what's Sup is a mystery to me Very Happy
As to the name "sup", "seep", "sep" etc., see my comment above. The reason maybe the same as in Russian/Ukrainian.

Robert, I don't know what Sup is, but we call it jastreb if it's the species Gyps fulvus is beloglavi jastreb
Yes, I know, I didn't say that you made a mistake. It was just strange to me because in our language Jastreb is a name for Goshawk
