PostSubject: Halter tutorial   Halter tutorial EmptySun Jun 15, 2014 6:28 pm

As some would like to see: Here's a short tutorial on how to make a halter Very Happy

Pythagoras, the APH,  is going to help me guide you through this tutorial : )
Halter tutorial IMG_4656_zps01b1a206

What do you need?

This is what you need at least: Round nose pliers, scissors, glue,(thin) Iron wire and ribbons diagonal pliers
Halter tutorial IMG_4657_zps8717e33d

Basics: making buckles
The are two main buckles for tack making. The little rings and the "8's" (that's how I call them).
For making the 8's one can easily use the round nose pliers by use one half of the nose for the first ring...
Halter tutorial IMG_4658_zpsc137eed2
... and the second half for the second ring.
Halter tutorial IMG_4660_zps3955d6a8
It now only needs to be cut off.
Halter tutorial IMG_4661_zps55930c0f
To make it flat I always use the the following part of the round nose pliers (see image).
Halter tutorial IMG_4662_zps504c2f1e

For the little rings I make something that looks like a spiral spring
Halter tutorial IMG_4666_zps45a6f950

Halter tutorial IMG_4667_zps4ce99b25
this way you can quickly cut off the rings.
Halter tutorial IMG_4668_zps2a63569f
After flatting the rings your buckles are done.
for this halter you'll need six rings and one '8'
.
Halter tutorial IMG_4669_zps818c0c50
If you don't like how the buckles look or if you just don't like making buckles, you can order professional one on the internet.

The Noseband
The first piece to make is the noseband.
We start we glueing a ring on one end of a ring.
Halter tutorial IMG_4670_zps60019e38
To make sure it attaches firmly you can use the round nose pliers and just hold it this was for a minute or so.
Halter tutorial IMG_4671_zpsd07f2a07
This part will be the upper nosepiece. there needs to be a ring on the other side too.
Halter tutorial IMG_4672_zps1547850e
This is how it should look after the two rings are attached.
Halter tutorial IMG_4674_zps049bb12e
For the lower nosepiece you need to hook on ring into another. Make sure they can't be pulled loose again
Halter tutorial IMG_4675_zpsd1483f86
the lower nosepiece looks a lot like the the upper piece, but you attach it to the rings that are already
attached to the upper part. And the two connected rings are connected to the lower piece like this:
Halter tutorial IMG_4676_zps0e24bc6d
This is how it should look like. You only need to pay attention that it should be easily removable from the horse's nose

Cheekpieces and Throatlatch
Next up are the cheekpieces.
Attach one ring to the end of the ribbon and connect the other side of the ribbon to a nose ring.
It should be about as long as pictured below.

Halter tutorial IMG_4682_zps7a176546

Do the some for the other side

Halter tutorial IMG_4683_zpsf2eabadf

The throatlatch is just a piece of the ribbon that goes all the way from one ring to the other, following the throat.

Crownpiece
For this part we need the little '8'.
Connect it to a little piece of ribbon the way it is pictured below

Halter tutorial IMG_4686_zpsc4a71db0

The other side of the ribbon needs to be connected to the some ring one cheekpart and the throatlatch is connected.
Which side you want it to be is up to you. I usually choose the "non-show side
": the side the horse is not looking to.

Halter tutorial IMG_4685_zps81df4f13

The crownpiece needs to be connected to the other ring.

Halter tutorial IMG_4687_zps92d708b9

Cut the ribbon diagonal so it is easier to get through the little '8' when you're gearing your horse

Halter tutorial IMG_4688_zps949c9092

When your horse is wearing it, it looks like this:

Halter tutorial IMG_4689_zps3a9721e6

Other side (the show side)

Halter tutorial IMG_4690_zps0b4f39db

Connecting strap
The last part of the halter is the connecting strap.
This is why we made the two rings on the lower nosepiece hooked into each other.
Attach a ribbon to one of the rings the way it's done in the picture below

Halter tutorial IMG_4691_zps895ebee1

The other end of the ribbon needs to be attached to the throatlatch, the same way you'd attach a ribbon to a ring.
Oh, and Dew Drop Dreamer thought the halter suited him better then Pythagoras  clown

Halter tutorial IMG_4692_zps6bc49f7b

Last is the finishing touch: removing any glue pieces that got stuck on wrong places.
However, if you work more careful you shouldn't have to do this.

Halter tutorial IMG_4694_zpsd14b9614

And now you have a finished halter!

Halter tutorial IMG_4697_zps64cdeb8f

Halter tutorial IMG_4695_zps5c4faa3d

And btw: I would love to see your halters when you've made one!

Its basically the same. The only difference is that you need to cut strips of leather first, and you'll need thin leather. (or you can order it online)

I typically skive my leather, as the leather I can buy isn't thin enough. Plus it eliminates bulk.

It's definitely tricky and takes a lot of practice, and you need a sharp blade too. But once you get the hang of it, it goes easy. Very Happy

tnx A-J Very Happy

I figured I had everything I need at home, so I tried making some:
Halter tutorial P7230020b

Halter tutorial P7240028b

The second one up there was too big so I "relocated" it to a more appropriate horse
