This place is reservation and breedingplace for the Przewalki horses. They try to save these wonderful creatures.
Nowadays they immigrate back some horses year by year to Mongolia to live free.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Hortobágy also important for the modern Aurochs. They live together with Przewalki horses as in the past.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Taurus Project
The ABU (
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Biologischer Umweltschutz), a conservation group in Germany, started to crossbreed Heck cattle with southern-European primitive breeds in 1996, with the goal to increase the aurochs-likeness of certain Heck cattle herds. These crossbreeds are called Taurus cattle. It is aimed to bring in aurochs-like features that are supposedly missing in Heck cattle, using Sayaguesa Cattle, Chianina and, to a lesser extent, Spanish Fighting Cattle (Lidia). The same is done in the Hortobágy National Park, additionally using Hungarian Gray Cattle and Watusi.
