During my latest Animal Buying Extravaganza I picked up a bag of various large jungle animals. It contained a giraffe and zebra - both rather cartoony, but charming nonetheless - and the usual three big cats: lion, tiger, and leopard. All three about the size of the Bullyland lions, and really exceptionally well made for cheapies. Instead of the usual "uniform parallel lines signifying hair texture", they have nicely sculpted muscle and fairly realistic fur detail. Still, there are certain flaws.... I think the tiger's mom may have mated with a traffic cone. The color is actually substantially more day-glo orange in real life! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]However, a bad paintjob isn't exactly the worst flaw in the world. After two afternoons' work he looks like this: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]This was my first ever attempt at a tiger pattern, hopefully not too wrong. I used a reference photo, but of course it's not unlikely that particular tiger may have had atypical stripes. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I always have tremendous trouble aligning the pupils... he looks slightly cross-eyed head on. There's a quick and easy recipe for painting eyes, actually. 1: Basecoat, in this case Citadel's Desert Yellow. 2: Mix base color with white and lighten the bottom of the eyeball. (For brown-eyed animals, use a lighter shade of the brown - burnt sienna, Indian red or similar.) This creates that semi-transparent effect. Metallic or pearlescent paints work very well for this. 3: Lightly shade the upper part of the eye, especially along the eyelid. Citadel has a line of special washes that are less runny than regular watered-down paint, I mixed green and sepia for this one. 4: Add pupil. 5: DO NOT, WHATEVER YOU DO, ADD THAT WHITE DOT. Just... don't. 6: Gloss.

Very good re-paint Sumo! In the close-up, this model has the feeling of an older composition model... The striping is that of a Sumatra- or extinct Java-tiger.

Well done, it is too bad that some very nice figures come with such poor painting, this is a huge improvement over the original paint job!
