| From my understanding and having studied photos reindeer are much smaller, have slightly different type antlers and coat colouration, a different facial shape (shorter) and more furry, splayed hooves. The Caribou's in North America have more compact hooves similar to deer and are larger with a longer, slightly curved nose bridge. This was modelled on the Woodland Caribou species. However there is still much speculation and if you search images under either name you can see such a wide variety of different types of reindeer. One particular favourite of mine is the Svalbard Reindeer - it is so cute and delightful and unusual looking that this species was going to be made instead of the Woodland Caribou. However the Caribou looks more like the stereo typical type of this species so it was chosen but I do hope we can have a Svalbard Reindeer in future because that is distinctly different, unless a fellow sculpting forum member could recreate one for us? Go look it up on google..... |

| I am impressed that your choice this time was based in an ecotype. Those are the largest subspecies of caribous and probably the most impressive so I see the choice very good. As Scott commented, it is not easy to distinguish among caribou subspecies, mainly when they are more based in ecotypes and populations then in morphological differences. So, judging this caribou without studying these little ambiguous details, I can tell that I am positively impressed with the figure, I like even the pose and it seems to have a huge amount of details. In my wish list for sure and another master work from CollectA for 2015! |

Well, as a person who've seen a lot of reindeers - I can definitely agree. But I still think this a really fine model maybe too caribouish I'd say too Great for collectors anyway! _________________ Jonas Animals are my friends. I don't eat my friends. | This is a really nice model, but for some reason I look at it and see a barren-ground caribou or even a mountain caribou. It could just be me though. None the less, its a great figure. _________________ "Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!"

| Just popping by (haven't even read the thread) to note I've just linked a reindeer-heavy Yamal Peninsula documentary [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and talk a little about the species' anatomy & morphology as well. Just thought it might pertain to this topic, too! |
