The walrus was introduced to Britains new plastic Zoo range as number 1328. The first issue, shown above, was released in 1962 and replaced in 1975. It was derived from the old Britains lead version’s mould which came out in 1933.

The model shown above is the replacement model designed by Ron Cameron and introduced to the Zoo range in 1975 and lasted until 1998 when the Zoo/wildlife range was deleted from Britains itinerary.

Now the image above shows both the 1962 and 1975 designs together. The newer version on the right is much better and certainly shows the progress Britains made in this period.

Chris, I am so glad you started these topics, they're so interesting and informative. Now it is much easier for me to identify all versions and it will be surely also to many other members. Very Happy

Chris,
Thanks for the photo of the 1st & 2nd walruses side by side.
I only have the older ones, and haven't studied the new one (presumably I've encountered them in boxes of assorted animals at toy fairs, but I've never bothered to really look), and didn't realise it is so much bigger than the old one.
I shall pay more attention, and buy one next time I see one.

Very interesting! I don't think I knew any of these two figures before. Really nice walruses. The newer one looks indeed more detailed than the older one. Smile It's interesting they have chosen almost the same pose for the later version.

Thanks Roger, jarda, Dave, Susanne, Andreas and Anna - STS is the place to present this information.

Dave, I never really bothered with Britains post 1971 Zoo / Wildlife releases either. However, after finding a few and then comparing them with the older issues I started to gain an interest. The two walrus versions provide an example that Britains were modifying the range for the better.

BTW another difference between these two is if you turn the newer version over it has a slightly hollowed out base.

On holiday now so will start taking photos again and will start old versus new red deer stag and the stable antelope.

I'm guessing a 'stable antelope' is like a sable antelope, but calmer and more sensible. Wink
