You worked with Giant elands ? Where ? There are none of them in europe currently-the last one died in 1980-only in some Us-Zoos, at Johannesburg Zoo or in the Wild...

AS far as I know the zoo I worked at had them.

It is my counter of how many models I have of each brand. It is my signature.

Amersfoort never kept Giant Eland, no Zoo in the netherlands did.
There were kept only at

Frankfurt(only one male in 1958)
Paris Zoo 1968-1974
Tierpark Berlin 1970-1980
Prag Zoo 1971-73
Dierenpark Plankendael 1967-1980

They have common elands instead and they are not so radically different. So surely [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] just mixed them what is normal, I guess. :)

Their english plate said giant for a while. Could be a mistake on the translation staff, lol.

According to the Amerfoort zoo site, there was a young Eland Antilope born at August 2014....
They even posted a video clip.
I have no idea if this is a Giant Eland or a Common Eland?
They just call it Eland Antilope.

It's a common, the giants have a black neck.
But the EAZA TAG for antelopes wants to import some giant elands directly from Africa and zoos from North America.

The plan to import giant elands again to europe exists many years. So hopefully it will really happen sometime, so like it happend with Gerenuk-but unfortuantely, they are not doing well in Berlin...so I have my doubt, if they can create a population out of thes every few inbred animals.

Giant elands doing very well in the Usa, so I think, after qurantine restrictions to the Eu are no longer that difficult, the chances to import giant elands from the USA are good, but not from Africa.

The gerenuk aren't doing that bad, the young animal died but only because it ate some things that he shouldn't. So we should stay positive (and anyway it would have been much better if they would have importet Northern Gerenuks animals from Catar) and hope that in some years there will be a good number of animals in Europe.

Yes, Bryan is right, those are common elands, I am just posting here pictures of both females with calves to turn clearer their differences ... and how beautiful they are.
