However, although it looks a lot like a centaur, it seems to me that it looks way too ferocious to be a GREEK Cenatur; I usually think of it as a BESTA FERA ("Ferocious Beast"). Besta Feras are centaurs that come from Brazilian mythology. They look like Occidental Centaurs, but are mostly nocturnal, going out at the full moon. They are told to come from hell. They look for graves where they disappear and hoards of wild dogs follow them. The sound of their hooves is terrifying. If a person looks at a Besta Fera in the eyes, the person will go mad for a more or less long period of time, before recovering. Don't you think the Chap Mei Centaur could be a Besta Fera? |

| The bestial beast (besta-fera), is actually a Portuguese legend that was adopted in Brazil when Portuguese saylors arrived there. They believe besta-fera is demon itself. On full moon nights, it gallops through small villages and little settlements and it only stops when finds the cemetery of the village when suddenly disappears. It is a fantastic creature, half man, half horse, the scary noise of its hooves clopping and echoing on all village obscure corners, is enough to keep all persons scared and barricaded in their houses - as you correctly said. Feral dogs and other animals, follow the beast in an infernal clamor, sometimes the beast whips the animals and they yelp dreadly! When besta-fera stops on a house door, we can hear its demoniac breath and we have to pray to it goes away. Isn't it cute? |

I should then stop studying chinese mythological qi-lins, pixius and longs to concentrate more on portugese mythology... |

When reading this topic I was thinking how could an ancient Brazilian mythology contain a centaur if there were no horses on the South American continent before the arrival of Europeans. The Portuguese source of this legend makes perfect sense. Very interesting beast, by the way. _________________ Anna Horse and Bird studio - Horse sculptures My model horse collection
