In my opinion it’s because the quality of the sculpting seem to drop year by year.
I only collect the horses so I’m a bit biased, but there seem to be more and more bad apples every year.

There has been at least one, but it kinda wasn't really due to them. This is my lone example, but I'm assuming they've probably cancelled/delayed stuff before it's just not made it to the public yet that it was to be released.

Back when Wonder Woman was going to come out in 2017, Schleich said they were going to release two movie figures from her movie. One was Wonder Woman is her clothing from Themyscira (the brown and gold stuff, not the red, gold, and blue). The other was Ares. It was never released to the wider public, but someone from this forum snapped a shot of it at one of the Toy Fairs. It was awesome! I believe it was grey and silver, but may have been brown. It even had a really cool cow skull (humongous longhorn-like) as his helmet. Sadly the figure was based off the pre-production images of Ares, which the movie later changed to looking more metallic looking and less bad-A version, in my opinion. Don't know why the figure was never released though. Still would've been cool to have.

Don't really know if this is an example your looking for, since it was more Warner Bros. fault and not Schleich's but I guess it kinda is an example of a cancelled figure.

And as far as I know, Schleich never issued anything about it. No why a figure that was supposed to come out wasn't released, no replacement Ares figure, just the lone Wonder Woman figure, along with the BvS versions that came out earlier that year.

While going back and trying to find the picture of the Ares figure that supposed to be released, I found something else. In 2016, Schleich released a statement about doing Marvel figures. They listed off a bunch that were supposedly supposed to be done in 2017. Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Falcon & Venom were released in January, while Iron Man, Thor (a figure previously not mentioned), Doctor Strange & Green Goblin were release in July. Ultron, Red Skull, and Dormammu have yet to be released. It's just another example that I totally forgot about and would never have thought of if I hadn't went back to look for the original Ares picture.

I think indeed, that they have troubles with the knees of the riders. They have to bend, and that is not possible if a item is molded in one piece. So they have to mold several pieces and put them together. Which can be tricky in mass production.

While I personally believe these kind of horse club figures are not the way this company should go since, in my opinion, they are much too stylized and completely exclude boys, I do feel sorry for the people who wanted them. I believe that they should have made a better effort to get these figures out on time.

However, if the figures they offered as replacements would have normally been retired this year, I see their extended stay as a very positive sign. It shows that they are at least trying to make up for their mistake.
