PostSubject: Collection Review: Papo and Schleich Elephants and Rhino!   Collection Review: Papo and Schleich Elephants and Rhino! EmptyMon 10 Jul 2023 - 10:51

Figure Brand: Schleich Papo

Figure Name(s): African Elephant (14762)
  Asian elephant (14753)
  Black Rhinoceros (50066)

Sex: African Elephant- Male
Asian Elephant- Female
Black Rhinoceros- Male

Name: African Elephant- Nelson
Asian Elephant- Ashanti (Ghanian- ‘Grateful’, or 'Undefeated, Strong, Powerful')
Black Rhinoceros- Crash

Year Made: African Elephant- 2016
Asian Elephant- 2017
Black Rhinoceros- 2008

Observations/Thoughts:
Schleich are good with their elephant models, from what I’ve seen all of them are really huge, hefty lumps, which they should be considering they are the biggest land animals in nature. I was genuinely surprised in seeing the elephants in person, they’re really heavy and have details like skin folds, roughness, wrinkles, all the things’ elephants do have, and in the case of Ashanti, the nipples under her forearms. Who knew elephants have them there…?
I shouldn’t be surprised really, as Schleich are known for their realism with their animal models…

Nelson, the African Elephant has his trunk raised and his mouth open, a great pose, but one that you might only see in the wild if an elephant was charging? Some cultures consider the pose with the trunk raised as lucky.

Ashanti however is far more realistic in her pose, just typically standing there with her trunk lowered, not a very dynamic pose, but more realistic.

As for Crash the Black Rhinoceros, he’s from Papo and by all means not complaining about them, their figures are great too but he’s very…shiny? Smooth? Rubbery looking? Extra smooth? Maybe it’s because he’s an older model, and a different brand but he’s not rough and wrinkly like the elephants, he’s smooth and shiny looking. He’s not in a charging pose, but with one foot forward, I guess it’s the general walking pose. He’s still a great chunky piece, there’s weight and bulk to him and is a good model if you’re looking for a rhino.

Rating:  Nelson the African Elephant – 5/5
Ashanti the Asian Elephant- 4/5
Crash the Black Rhinoceros- 4/5

Some nice models here!
I really like Nelson. His pose is powerful and the his skin details are astonishing. He and his family are on my wishlist as I don't have any African elephants yet.
Ashanti is already a part of my collection just as the rest of her family. She is a wonderful model, she just creates a calm atmosphere which I really like. Unfortunately she doesn't have a name yet but I will hopefully come up with something in the future.
I didn't know Ashanti is an African name. I've heard it before but never thought about it properly. Nice to know.
Crash is a nice model as well but I am not sure yet if I will get him or not. I just didn't think through yet which rhinos I want for my collection (apart from Indian rhinoceroses).

Hi Katy, thanks and yeah I did some research on and off the internet and it consistently brings up Ashanti as being a name from Ghana, though another, small source said it was also Indian. I went with it anyway so I hope I'm not wrong, it's stuck on her now! ^^
