great comparisons Alain! the caracal in the top pics really blends in very well, as does the leopard? on the right.
The latter photos make the tiger blend in well I think, though the leopards are good too. I can see why the stripes are advantageous in tall grasses.

I love comparison pics like these Very Happy Applause  sunny  study

Maybe leopard. They're really good on it and it is not just a question of fur but also behaviour.

Wonderful pictures Paige who show how mimetic are the stripes of the tigers on high grasses! Don't hesitate to post other samples! I hope other contributions here! 🙂

We have it very well represented on Papo and Britains leopard figures. Besides the pattern which blends perfectly with the surroundings, they also break down their line and they can move very slow and silent. All of this contributes to a high level of mimicry.

What is fascinating with the cats is their skill to make themselves cryptic, I remember to have search my cat a long time at home before to find him, though is robe is rather variegated! :)

in your photos I would say the leopard, but if the coat colour of the tiger were not as orangey, then it would be a draw between them.
The stripes of the tiger make it blend in more and break down it's shape, whereas the leopard only blends in because of the coat colour.
I squinted my eyes to 'see' this way.

Very interesting topic. I think the tiger's camouflage is more efficient than it seems, since its natural prey can only see yellow, green and indigo blue. The slightly reddish color of some tigers is unseen by them.
That's why Asian deer love the company of monkeys, who are sensitive to the color red and can sound the alarm.

that's a good one Alain! and considering that the cat would maybe be moving slowly, it would be very hard to see!

It reminds me of Vincent Munier's photos. In one of them, you couldn't make out the snow leopard at all, and when you did, you realized it was staring right back at you. Indescribable!
