New Asian misterious pangolin was discovered!

Scientists have discovered a new species of pangolin in China, the ninth known species and the fifth in Asia, named Manis mysteria. The discovery was based on genomic analysis of pangolin scales seized in illegal trade in Hong Kong. Signs of a new species initially emerged in 2012, but it was only recently, with scales confiscated in Yunnan in 2015 and 2019, that genetic distinction could be confirmed.

This Asian pangolin species separated from others over five million years ago. However, research reveals that Manis mysteria is under pressure, with low genetic diversity and high levels of inbreeding. Scientists are uncertain about its exact whereabouts, underscoring the urgent need for further research.

While we don't have a picture of a confirmed sight here is a illustration of one of the closest related species, the Sunda pangolin. Actually, it is not expectable to find a species with relevant differences from the others since pangolins tend to be quite similar. However, I needed to share this news with you since I am crazy about these creatures.
