Although Breyer began producing animal models in the 1950s, to my knowledge, 1969 was the first Collector's Manual. I've seen black & white copies of earlier Dealer's Catalogs, but I don't recall there being an earlier Collector's. If there is, it's extremely rare. (I really should do some research on that.)
Well, i discovered that not only was there an earlier Collector's Manual, i have a copy!  Embarassed ...of a copy of a copy of a copy...

but from what i've seen on-line, this is the earliest known Collector's Manual. I don't recall ever seeing it in color- but then, i didnt' remember i had it!  Razz

I told you the 5-gaiter is classic! He was released in 1962. Always one of my favorite molds, if not my favorite. when i decided to stop collecting Breyers, i considered just collecting gaited horses, or even only Saddlebreds, or even only 5-gaiters. As it was, i kept only my 'old guard', including 2 five-gaiters.
In the early days, they had about 1/2-1/2 horses-animals for molds, but most of the horses came in many colors, so they win! Gradually they pared down until it was one color per mold at a time. But they'd change the color every year or even twice a year!

Did you not see the 1969 and 1970 catalogs i posted earlier? they're in color!

i'll keep scanning and posting catalogs. What a Face

Great old catalogue Carolynn!
I always love to see into old catalogues, it brings back old days, even when i was 4 years old at the time this catalogue came out. Laughing
I didn't even knew that Breyer made models already in the 1950's, i always thought it was a relatively new brand... Rolling Eyes

A friend of mine has an original 1968 Breyer Collectors' Manual, and was generous enough to let me borrow it to scan it.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It's one sheet, in a 4-fold, sepia on a sort of cream paper, although that may be just age. The yellow front and back "covers" is definitely age.

here's a somewhat better version. the whacky size is from my having to piece the pages together and i couldn't get them the same scale. oh well, at least it's big enough to see!
the dark marks over some of the model numbers were probably by the original owner of the folder, marking off the models she had. i remember doing that myself.

i got better scans of this old catalog and edited the post above.
our scanner was acting especially stupid and i couldn't get it to do a whole page at once, so i had to piece together the pages and it's nota great copy, but with the pain in the arse it was to get this much, i'm going to post it, dadburnit!

if i have the time, i'll gird my loins and battle with it AGAIN to try to get a decent scan.

It's incredible you still have those 44-year-old catalogs in your hands! Even if it's a copy of a copy!
