Revolutionary new taxonomy of Bovidae Empty
PostSubject: Revolutionary new taxonomy of Bovidae   Revolutionary new taxonomy of Bovidae EmptySun Sep 18, 2011 5:25 am

Yesterday I received a long waiting "Handbook of the Mammals of the World - vol.II Hoofed Mammals"

There is establishment of entire new systematics of family Bovidae. Based on the Colin Groves new taxonomy(PSC) Bovidae expand from 143 to 279 species! A lot subspecies become full species.

There is 41 species of duikers, 11 species Klipspringer, 18 Hartebeests, 4 Cape Buffalos, 8 Bushbuck, 4 Greater Kudu ...

It seems to be a huge cornerstone in Mammalogy.

It's interesting that Primatology already accepted Colin Groves's Phylogenetic species concept, few years ago and Primates now are 418 species!

Gosh Shocked
So the number of species almost doubled !!!!
Some of those must be terribly difficult to distinguish, - like 4 species of cape buffaloes, 18 hartebeests etc... scratch

The book looks very large - is it possible for you to scan an example, please ?
I know it can be impossible if you have a small scanner and the book is heavy and large.

Dear, Harriet
HMW2 is actually, fantastic! Personally, I'm waiting this book, since I was kid, but never dreamed it would be so unique!

The new species Verheyen's Duiker (Philantomba walteri) found in 2010 is also inside.

Dear, Susanne
Unfortunately, I haven't scaner, but if you want some particular information, pleace ask. In fact, 4 species of Cape Buffalo are very interesting and highly distinguishable.

Thanks, Dear Ana.It's good that all species are very good illustrated in book, even some accounts of new described species are not so complete.
