| Wow, that cassowary and kangaroo.... whats the furry guy in the corner of the case with the cassowary? A coati mundi or a red panda? I can't quite tell... _________________ -"I loathe people who keep dogs. | Great pics! What do you do with the deer antlers when they are shed? Do you sell them or put them in the museum? _________________ "Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!"

Red panda! Well spotted! Actually, this case is for temporary displays so the contents will changed soon. The current theme of the case is endangered animals. The next theme will be extinction (so it will contain some fossils too). I'll share photos when the new display is complete. As for the antlers that are shed by deer that roam the grounds, the park is public, so I believe it is finders keepers for whoever comes across them. I never have myself... |

| Gosh, I never discovered this subject before What a wonderful place you work, - thankyou ever so much for all the great photoes About antlers. We have lots of red deer ( and others ) here, but I think very few of the antlers are ever found. I have lived next to forests most of my life, and have only found one little antler from a roebuck. The people who have worked there for a wole life never found any They usually shed them in places with dense growth, where they just look like dead branches, and I have been told that mice and such eat them, so after a week they are more or less gone. |

| It is true that mice eat them. I have a shed from a whitetail/mule deer I found near my cabin, all the points are chewed off but the main beams are still intact, but yes they also look like dead branches. If I have time I might post a picture. _________________ -"I loathe people who keep dogs. | I have found a few whitetail sheds around my house. When I was in Yellowstone, if found lots of elk sheds, but unfortunately it is illegal to take them from the park. _________________ "Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!"

| Thanks. I love walking in the woods looking for sheds. I usually spend 99.9% looking, and .1% finding. Michigan is really nice because there are whitetails state wide, elk in the upper central part of the state, and mpose in the upper peninsula. I have never found a Michigan moose or elk shed, but that would be incredible.
It would also be fun to find a Roebuck shed or red stag shed. _________________ "Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!"

| I've been busy over the last few years preparing and curating a special exhibition of dinosaurs from China. It includes the tallest dinosaur skeleton ever seen in the UK and real fossils of feathered dinosaurs. It opened this month and will run until the end of October. It is a one-off world exclusive exhibition that is unique to the Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall, and is well worth a visit if you're interested in dinosaurs. Here's the website to find out more: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.][You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Also, here's a review of the exhibition in New Scientist: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

| I intended to post this picture in a 'photos of us' topic, but I couldn't find one. Is there one that I missed? Anyway, I thought you might enjoy this picture of me surrounded by some of the animals in the Nottingham Natural History Museum at Wollaton Hall. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The taxidermy specimens in the museum are used for education, research, promoting wildlife conservation, and to inspire visitors to take an interest in the living natural world. The animals are all historical specimens, mostly Victorian. Nowadays we only accept animals into the collection that died of natural causes. |
