| And here is flying one, the photos show him a little bit strange, but flying poses are hard to show nicely on photos [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| Very well done Ana, I especially love the flying one, beautiful. So, how did you make those wonderfully slender legs! Something I'd like to be able to do with my birds. The clay you use must be fantastic to work with. What was it again? |

Thank You Harriet Legs are made of wire and glue ( ) I put drop of glue on bird's feet and let it dry when the shape is right. Sometimes second layer is needed. But for all other parts of birds I use Magic Sculp -it's epoxy clay-getting harder after 2 hours from mixing part A with part B. Inner layer I made of Fimo clay. |

| Harriet, I have now a flying fox that I can't get a good photos of, it never seems to be in focus when I try to take pictures of it because the camara focuses on the trees in the background, but I have two different ways to display the flying vulture I just haven't decided which one I will use. The first way, which is how the flying fox is done, is to use a flexable wire attached to one of the trees (the banyon for him) and I then attached the wire to the figure so he is suspended above the diorama at about the level of the top of the tree. The other way I could display a flying animal would be to use the rafters of the workshop and attach a monofilament line to them and hang the bird from that so it is flying over the diorama. I will do what I can to get some good photos as soon as I have the vultures set up on the diorama. |

Ah, thanks Phil, the rafters will come in useful then, for those birds that spend their time out in the open, circling for food. Can't wait to see the vultures in your diorama. |

| Yes, it will look very good in photographs, and when you are standing in front of the diorama I have another big supprise but I don't know how it will if I take a picture. I buy most of my supplies from companies that do dioramas especially WWII dioramas. I found a product that is used to make clouds for air battle dioramas or if there are planes making bombing runs, just about any diorama that there is a sky as a part of the diorama. Well working backwards from an article I found some tiny strobe lights for model trains and ordered both the cloud kit and the strobe lights. I also bought the biggest bulk pack of the clouds that they sell and my idea is to make a late afternoon tropical thunder storm on the Indian diorama.
I have been all over the tropics for both personal and work animal collecting trips and I have lived in Florida in the past (I still consider it home even though I am in California) and most summer afternoons there are thunderstorms with a downpour of rain for about 3 to 4 hours in the late afternoon. The kit is made to just make a few clouds, but after reading an article on making a diorama of a tornado I decided to make a large thunder cloud formation, airbrush the clouds the dark and light greys of storm clouds and put the two strobes into the clouds. When you are standing in front of the diorama you will see and hear (I have a CD of nature sounds and one of the "songs" is thunder and rain) lightning flashes and thunder. It should be impressive.
I can't make it yet as I don't have a way to hang the clouds until the diorama is against the wall or has some sort of back to it so I can mount the supports I need to attach the clouds, but I have made some 8 and 10 inch clouds and put the strobes into them just as a test and the look is really nice. I think the storm clouds will show up in a photo, but to catch a flash of lightning in a still shot would be really hard to do and I am not sure it wont just show up as a flash from the camara so I don't think that will work. What I will do is something like YouTube or another video site where I can post a link so the visual won't be lost in a still photo. |

| Phil, Your idea is fantastic! I remember You mentioned about it one of Your letters but now I can't wait to see the effect! You are 100% about the video is better than still photo. This really sounds amazing!! |

| Thanks Ana, for the comments and the sculptures. I will send you a link as soon as it is done, but for everyone who is excited about this part of the diorama please remember this can't be done until I have the back up to mount the wires that will support the clouds. This could be months or more before I even get to that part. I hope it doesn't take that long, but I don't think it will be until at least the spring of next year.
My hope is to find a cabinet maker who will build not only a stand to put it on so I can display these models in the main part of the house, but have a shadow box type cover made with a glass front and internal lighting so I can keep the dust and other things out of the model and display it in a museum type setting. Then I could mount the clouds to the top of the box and contain the whole model with the back and sides painted to look like extensions on the diorama.
If I get my dream to come true (Danny and I just talked about this last night) I would have a seperate building put up like my workshop where I have 3 walls painted like different scenes and the whole diorama would be like a model train set up. You would walk into the room and the diorama would be on tables with a pathway that you walk through, first to the left would be one display, and as you walk the diorama would be on both sides of you at about 36 inches (just about 1 meter high) and against the wall would be a mural that is just an extension of the diorama, where rivers and trees matched up so it looks like you are looking off into the distance. As your turn to the right would be a different scene, again with the back wall painted to match that part of the diorama and so on all the way to the other side of the room. Along the front wall, where the door is would be my work benches and diorama making supplies so I could work right there in the room. right now I work at my desk in my computer room making the wire frames and sculpting the clay, then I have to take it out to the workshop, which is on the other side of the property so in bad weather is not a fun walk, especially if you are carrying freshly made models and see what modifications have to be done, bring it back make any changes and go back out there. Not fun in a snow storm or a cold night, especially since I have a mountain lion that lives on the property and you never know if he is going to decide that people are now on the menu!! |
