I am delighted to introduce to you the new Scottish terrier from Papo  cheers
Isn`t this the first and only Scottie, the "big brands " have ever made ?
And this one is ever so wonderful, IMHO  Very Happy

Westie is thrilled also. The two of them are woofing in Scottish together, I don`t understand much of it  Shocked

Scottie`s colour is somewhat unusual. Most Scottish terriers are black.
In scotland there was originally only one breed of teriieres, but as it goes, people began to breed for specific properties, and chose the black for Scottie, the weathen Cairn, and the White for Westie.
But still sometimes the "wrong" colours pop up among Scotties ( Black must be dominant).
They are not white, they are "weathen" like their cairn cousins.

How winderful that Papo chose to make one. But I hpoe they make a black one also next year  Very Happy

Ta-daaa : Not Black-and-white, but Weathen-and white :

I don`t know if that is the case any more, but some yours ago they had bred the backs of these poor critters so short, that they could only have puppies by cesarean Evil or Very Mad

Watching some pictures of real Scottish I find more or less the same crazy looking dog. So, it seems Papo continues doing a good work with dog breeds. I don't have a special atraction for this kind of dogs but they are really funny looking creatures and surely good friends. Very Happy

Congratulations! Typically when I think of scotties (dogs) I think of black or gray ones, so it did surprise me when I saw this one as white. Splendid new figure!

Awr, that's horrible No I hope they've stopped breeding further that short back line.

You think of whiskey Razz Laughing

I wonder what the first dog was, the ancient grandmother. We people haven't existed for that long, according to general world history, so it's kind of desturbing how much can be changed over a fairly 'short' range of years...

AFAIK ancestors of most of the dogs are wolves (maybe with some exceptions scratch ) at least according to some NG programs and articles. They even wrote their DNA is almost the same :)

My friend from Poland is fascinated by the breed Czechoslovakian wolfdog and looking at photos of her dogs I'm really falling in love in these creatures too here is article about this breed. I love their natural beauty, wonderful proportions and faces. I think maybe it would be my favorite breed of dogs also. My dog which I had as kid also resembled wolf a little bit (except he was smaller and with not standing ears). Very Happy

WOW! What a beautyful dog, Anna Shocked

I have read somewhere that the old breeds of gazehounds ( Pharaohound, saluki, podenkos etc) are more related to jacquals than to wolves study
It makes sence to me, they are more cat-like in their ways scratch

Oh, that's very interesting! And sounds very possible too Very Happy Are these breed also less social than others (as jackals live mostly in pairs or alone)?

Glad You like the wolfdog breed too, my friend has two females and they are very pretty indeed Very Happy

Ohhh! So you know the breed, wow Shocked Very Happy

About being social, - I only know the Saluki, and they certainly don`t like strangers !
Last Saturday I had visitors, and Fidda was lying under my desk the whole day, trembling whenever somebody tried to talk to her. That is normal behaviour for a saluki Rolling Eyes
But the Saluki has been the hunting dog of the desert nomads for at least 8 - 10000 years, so of course they have had to become social to a certain degree. scratch

Great little model and thanks for the great pictures Susanne-he is on my wishlist as its a model that is rarely made and if it is its usually black.
As you have mentioned they also come in wheaten and they can also be a dark brindle but I have only ever seen one of each in real life compared to the amount of black Scotties that you see. They also were called Aberdeen Terriers at one time and as pointed out they have changed a lot since the 1930s-I have a dog book from then and the dogs look so diiferent back then and this also includes many dog breeds!!
The Westie and Cairn were the same terrier at one point and both white and coloured puppies occurred in the same litter but then someone decided they didnt like the white puppies and they were excluded form the Cairn but luckily someone else liked the white puppies and hey presto you then have the Westie breed!!

With regards to dogs ancestry all the evidence points to the wolf being the dogs ancestor. It may not be the wolf that we know today as these wolves have for so long been under pressure from man but form wolves many thousands of years ago.Dogs can mate with wolves, coyotes and jackals but studies with jackals have shown that repeated crosses lead to decreased infertility and also behavavioural problems which dog not occur when dogs are crossed with wolves whcih some scientists consider are the same animal but just in different forms!

The Czech wolfdogs seem to be getting really popular in here in the UK but it must be remembered that its a dog that looks like a wolf and presently has very little or non existent wolf genes in it-I know it originally had as the purpose was to try and improve the dogs gene pool.

Thankyou for your contribution, Taylor Very Happy

I heard somewhere that the Inuits previously also let their dogs cross with wolves now and then, I don`t know it that is right, though scratch

Yes Suzanne apparently the Inuits used to sometimes tie out thier husky bitches for wolves to mate with but that was risky as the wolf was also likely to kill the dog!!However it was soon found out that wolf dogs are not built to haul sledges as their chests are too narrow and also the they become more intractable as they get older and just want to fight with the other dogs! There were a number of sledge dog teams with wolf dog crosses but the were mostly for show by explores or showman and even they found out the the teams didnt work!!
