PostSubject: Indian Elephant Bull   Indian Elephant Bull EmptyThu Aug 29, 2013 5:11 am

Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I've seen work by a lot of you all and I was very impressed. I was working on a model of a bull Indian elephant based on one in a local zoo. Let me know what you all think so far. He's 5  inches tall by 9 inches long. Special thanks to elephas_maximus for all of his insight and guidance.

Welcome on forum and thanks for sharing your project with us! Very Happy
It will be exciting to follow it, I needed to edit your original post to make pictures appear but fortunately I did it once they are fantastic comparing the real animal with your work. elephant
I think the first kind of picture we need to make a judgement is a straight and full side view of the figure, somewhat similar to the first one but with the camera at the same level of the figure. In that way we can check the general profile and proportions after checking the details. What I can see is very good and obviously you're studying carefully the characteristics of an Indian elephant. Keep us updated and good luck! cheers elephant

Thanks Roger! I was having a little trouble uploading the pictures. I'm figuring everything out as I go hahaha. The elephant is made from super sculpey while his ears, tusks, tail, and legs are made from super sculpey firm. He stand 5 inches (12.7 cm) tall and is 9 inches (22.86 cm) long. I'd like to say he's about 1:24 scale. Attached are some more pics and one next to the Wild Safari female Asian elephant for comparison. I'll begin painting him over the next few days.

I am glad you figured how to post pictures and these last are very good to judge your work. Very Happy
It is really a fantastic piece, I like almost everything on it, I only think the head looks somewhat massive but maybe it is a personal mania, I mean, mainly, the lower maxilla and jowl in general. It is always hard to be helpful when we are seeing such a brilliant work, mainly knowing that I am not even able of sculpting a earthworm. pale elephant
Looking forwar to se it finished and congratulations for having all this talent. Very Happy

Thanks Sussane! I've made a few models before, but this was the first elephant I've tried to replicate off of a living one.

Thanks for the suggestions, Roger. The elephant that this particular replica is modeled after is named Dahlip. He is pretty large for the average Asian elephant, which is why some of the features appear massive. The jaw actually isn't that big, it's just opened at a lower angle. I've attached some pictures of Dahlip so you can have a better look at the elephant himself. :)

I am glad you think there is nothing to change and surely you're right once you studied this particular elephant very well. I see you're using very good pictures, particularly the frontal view where we can see clearly the shape of the head that you replicated very well. Nice to see the work progressing. It would be also fantastic in future, to see other works you did! bounce elephant

Thanks Roger! I've been studying this bull for a while now and figured I'd try my hand at finally sculpting him. I may put my older work up in the future.

Just begun texturing now...
