PostSubject: my Britains giraffes - repaint   Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:56 pm

I have theese amazing giraffes from Willy! I think giraffes from Britains are the best... all those details (tail, hooves, ears, knees...). But one think was pretty bad... coloring. So... here is new coat for one of them :)
BEFORE... I had to bend their necks a little and their legs...

A few nice things about the Britain's giraffes... : )
1) SIZE...They look "relatively proportional" to the other figures in the collection, so that if you set up your African savanna display, they look proportional next to the Britains' zebra, ostrich, gazelle, gnu and Black rhino etc..

2) The lovely artistic detail and realism they have(The tail really looks like a real giraffe tail).

3) With the moveable neck, you can place 2 or more together, and by positioning the neck differently on how ever many you have, they can appear to look different figures(Instead of the same one).

Wow Martin, finally i see your work on these giraffes, great job! Very Happy

Yes Susanne, Britains made some animals with movable parts in their later deetail series, this giraffe, an austrich wih movable neck to, and a crocodile with a movable jaw, which could be openend or closed.
here are some pics, the giraffe, and her calf were made in 2 different paintversions to.

Yes, I have the version 2 giraffes. The adult croc is a cool figure too! With moveable parts(Although, minimal), they should be classified as "action figures".

Great Martin, I also agree that Britains are the best giraffes! I also have a one, almost unpainted and thought in ask Harriet to repaint it. Anyway I changed my idea because it is the only one I have and I want it as it is! I love her in that way.
But, it is really fantastic to see a repainting from someone that more than know all the details of a giraffe pattern, is someone that really love them and see them as the most magnificent animal in the world. I love you
Your work is absolutly wonderful so my big congratulations!!! cheers

Susanne: Willy is a complete expert in Britains and I'm also collecting them with the help of our fantastic friends. Someday I will show them compared with modern brands! I hope! :)

Unfortunately, the Britains range of zoo/wildlife animals were withdrawn in 1998. After this date they were not included in catalogues. In Britain they were still available in toy shops for a few years after this date. However, these shops are now stocking Schleich models.

Hi,

for those who can afford it, this small book covers the early Britains plastic animals.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Many of them is made after the lead ones from earlier. But not all of the lead animals went plastic, like the Bushbok, Gazelle or the Warthog.

During the plastic years Britains modified and changed their animals. + added more species.

The book above dont cover some of the best one made, presented after 1971 like the Gaur, the new Sable Antilop or the Wildeebest.

There are two other books in this serie one about the Britains flower garden and one about the Farm.

The best book about Britains is James Opies "The Great Book of Britains" but it is out of print and expensive as hell om E-bay. (but I got it... :-) ).

640 pages covering everything Britains made from the beginning 1893 to 1993 but of course it has not pics of everythin, but all is in the index and every year has a chapter with all new and withdrown that year. A goldmine...

And Martin, if U want Britains running Giraffe foal in good shape but not so good painted, just send Your adress!

Happily we do have more Britains experts here now! cheers
The giraffe with movable neck is in the middle section, when it comes to rareness i think, the later Massai-version is more rare imho.
It is a matter of finding a nice one, with all of its spots still on, and even rarer, the first edition of the adult giraffe, still with spots...
The metall one in good shape belongs to the most rare of them... Shocked

I think, it is remarkably better painted, in better detail then the previous version indeed.
The old metall version, the same mould as the first plastic one, is just a dream, specially in a good shape!
