PostSubject: Show Us Yours: Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos)   Show Us Yours: Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos) EmptySat Nov 01, 2014 10:23 pm

I am glad I can start a topic for one of the majestic living creatures that still lives in my country, although in a very limited areal.

Some basic introduction on the species
Brown bears (Ursus Arctos) are still considered to be the largest terrestrial carnivore, although they are actually omnivores. They are quite widespread - North America, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, South and East Europe, Middle East, Himalayas, China and Mongolia. Main habitat are forests, subalpine and alpine tundra, but can be found in some deserts or semi-deserts.
Brown bears have indeed a massive build with head-body lenght from 1,5 to 2,8 m, shoulder height from 0,9 to 1,5 m and weight from 80-250kg for females to 135-700 kg for males. Actually, a case study on North American Bears revealed that those individuals who eat more meat (fish, small mammals, rodents or livestock) are significantly heavier than those who consume more plants and plants parts (fruits, roots, grasses, etc.) in their diet.
Interesting fact is that during winter sleep bears' heart and respiratory rate decline appreciably, but they lower their temperature only with a few degrees, which is not a typical energy-saving strategy. Unlike other hibernating animals, they do not wake up by themself to feed, drink and re-warm, so they may be considered as the only mammals able to survive without basic physiology activities for almost half an year.
Bears' strongest sense is smell, with sight and hearing less developed (quite small eyes and ears in comparison with the head/skull size).
Of course, Brown Bears are mostly brown in colour :), but they can also have blond, silverish and even black coats.
Lifespan of the Brown Bears in the wild is up to 25 years, and up to a decade more in captivity.
Main subspecies: North American (Grizzly) Bears, Kodiak Bears and Eurasian Brown Bears.

And now, to my models :)

Schleich, Brown bear and cubs
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Schleich, Grizzly bears family (*Grizzly Bears are named after their "grizzled" coat - hair is lighter at the tips than at the base)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Schleich, Grizzly Bear with cubs
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Safari ltd, Grizzly bear with salmon (*Choosy folks: When there is an abundance of food, bears eat only the most energy-rich parts of the fish or go for the younger and more nutrient fish. Of course, when it is hard to find food, quantity prevails above quality)
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And, the last one from me, is the Majestic Bear from Schleich Bayala:

A few of my favorites (that I own -- I love the Bayala bear above, but alas, do not have it).

The CollectA Brown Bear
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Schleich Grizzly from 2013. I couldn't purchase the standing bear -- it looked too much like a human in a suit.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Kitan Club Grizzly -- one of the best ever
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Papo Byrenees -- very lovely
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I know folks were disappointed in the painting on this one, but it's still one of my all time favorites.

Also, I have to say that while I love the sculpt of the Safari Grizzly, the paintwork lets it down and I can't, for the life of me, take a good picture of it.

Maria, your picture of the Safari Grizzly above is one of the best I've seen. It does the model justice!

I hate to be the one to tell you, but the little ceramic one is a Wade 'Whimsy' kitten! It does look like a baby bear!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

My contribution is a large (composition size) wooden 'erzgebirge' covered in a sand-textured paste and a little ivory bear

Indeed it is, i have known it for quite some time, but i think i ll let it pass.
The figure has only a small stomp for tail. Surely not a cat's tail.

No i will leave the gun on, because it is attached to the driving mechanism.
And it is part of the harnass the bear is wearing.
