| Subject: Question about the Papo Cassis "Lapdog" (Cassis chien de compagnie) Sat Jul 14, 2012 7:22 am | |
| I'm hoping someone can help me with a question I've been having about one of Papo's 2012 animal figures -- the Cassis Lapdog (Cassis chien de compagnie) model #54013. My question is essentially, What sort of dog is this supposed to be exactly? I think the fact that Papo is calling the dog a 'lapdog' seems to be a mistake. The word 'lapdog', at least in American English, refers to a very small, well-behaved breed of dog. The Papo dog does not appear to be a lapdog in this sense. I've seen Papo be slightly sloppy with English translation in the past (for example, translating 'Mouflon' as 'Mountain Sheep' was particularly confusing since in English these words refer to two different types of animals). So perhaps that is the case in this instance as well (they are being sloppy). Further support for that possibility is that 'chien de compagnie', given my very limited French, seems to translate into 'pet dog'. But if that's right, I still don't know what a Cassis pet dog is. In fact, I cannot find anything that suggests that 'Cassis' helps indicate what breed or type of dog this is. Does anyone know what's up? Is the Papo figure a model of just the sort of "Lab mix" mutt that one would expect to see as a stereotypical pet? What is the significance of using the word 'Cassis' in the description of the model? I'm really curious to know what people think and I'm hoping someone has an answer that will clear up my ignorance on this matter. (C'mon STS Forum members, help me out.) (I hope Harriet doesn't mind that I'm linking to one of her fantastic photos of the Papo "Cassis Lapdog" that she already posted in her [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. But I'd be happy to edit this out and can replace it with my own picture tomorrow.) [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| As far as I understand French, this black dog is a "pet dog" who's named Cassis |

| Great question, Scott ! I have wondered also about it, but never got round to ask. Thankyou, Christophe ! I know that "Cassis" means black currant. My generation knows it from the sweet stuff ( Créme de Cassis) that was put in white wine to make the horrible drink "KIR" . It was very popular many years ago. So it makes a lot of sence that the dog is called Cassis. About the mountain sheep, - now I understand why Roger corrects me, when I call the Mouflon a mountain goat ! In Danish we call them all (Bighorns, Mouflons etc ) " Bjerggeder", unless we want to be very precise. Here we see it again. English seems an easy language at a first glance, but to be able to express yourself correctly is quite another matter |

| I know zero french other than how to ask if you speak it! well, to me he just seems to look like an elderly labrador, possible a mutt type cross (souldn't surprise me since schleich tried that this year). But otherwise i cannot help you. He is still on my wishlist though! |

Excellent! Thank you Christophe, that is so helpful. Now we have a much better translation into English of what Papo is calling that model. I agree with Saarloosewolfhound and Taylor and am guessing that the breed of the dog is a Lab-mix or Labrador (this is also what Harriet suggested somewhere). |

| That is fantastic! Susanne said it best: Great Eye!!
How odd that it is in the 2010 catalogue. I'm even more intrigued now. I think I might try to send an email to Papo, if I can find a contact address.
Thank you Emilia!

| I found this topic when trying to look up the same question. It popped up on my amazon suggested. I had to look up the Papo website. Looks like it is a mutt based on the description: - Quote :
- Cassis is a friendly black dog. She gets her name (which means “blackcurrant”) from the colour of her coat. No-one’s sure of her breed, but this is of no great importance. For her master, she will always be the most beautiful dog in the world. Cassis lives in the countryside and loves long walks, jumping with joy when she sees her master getting ready to go out with her. Everyone loves Cassis and she is very dear to her family.

| Thanks for the info. I was looking for information as I think this is one of the more realistic dog figures I've seen but didn't know its breed. Now I know it's what in Spain we name "un chucho" (I think you call it "a mutt"). |
