Problems with the plastic in Safari Dinos???????????

Yesterweek I got a Safari dilophosaurus  used and one of the hands broke off in the box with other toys.  I was looking at it and the plastic is very brittle like what would be on a display only model kit.  Today at the thrift store i got 2 more Safari T Rex and the Velociraptor they had was also missing a hand due to brittle plastic.  Is this a known issue

I never relly seen thies figures as toys. I seen bad reviews on amazon about People complaining how BRITTLE They are after mindlesly giveing them to there childeren.

I learnd at a young age to never see these as toys, whitch shows why they retail for higher prices then the Dollor dinos you can get at Wal-Mart.

These are not met to rough housed with. the ones you got from the thirft store probuly came from a parent or two who did not know better when they gave a expensive Educatinal Collectible to there child.


So yes some safari Dinos are Brittle, because they are not met to be played with roughly.

The three Safari T Rex I and all the other safari models I found are all made of softer plastic than the dilophosaurus. The dilophosaurus also had such details as each finger and toe was separate from the others that made them weaker. I almost wonder if some are meant to be toys and others like the dilophosaurus that might be sold at museums are meant to be more accurate and educational

Some of the older figures from the 1990s are made out of softer plastic. And so were some Carnegie figures into the early 2000s. That T-rex is from the earlyer years, when they were made more softer.

As far as I can tell, It was in 2005 When Carnegie started using the Brittle material with there Albertasaurus and feathered dinos

and 2008 is the time Safari rebooted there Wild Safari Collection, With there Allosaurus, which was made with the harder Plastic.

This is odd... I have many Safari dinos, both Carnegie and regular, from various years, and not one of them is brittle in any way whatsoever. My first thought when I read the topic title was there could be a faulty batch of plastic (some of the horses have had issues with unfixable stickiness).
Although the plastic in my newer Safari dinos is hardish, I wouldn't call it brittle by any stretch of the imagination. Are we talking completely inflexible Breyer-style plastic?

totally stiff and brittle plastic, that holds a great detail but any bend and it will snap, like the styrene plastic model cars are made of

I'm sorry to hear you've had this experience, Vondan.

In my experience the plastic in Safari's figures is not brittle, but actually has a bit of "give" to it. Also, although none of the figures we sell are played with of course, my children have some Safari figures of their own, and some of those have been played with. While I would agree that the figures with small detail (horns, thin tails, claws, etc.) won't stand up to rough play, I wouldn't call them brittle either.

I'm wondering if the figures were exposed to a lot of sunlight or something else that affected the plastic? I know that many plastics when exposed to bleach become more brittle, but I would imagine that exposure to bleach would be evident in the paint! Perhaps the previous owner displayed them on a windowsill that got a lot of sun? Or the children played with them in a pool?

We started selling Safari figures in 2007, so I can't speak to the quality of their plastic before that. The Allosaurus you mentioned doesn't seem brittle to me, but it is firm (at least the figure in my possession). Still the "hands" on it will bend as they are thinner than say the head or the base of the tail (where it joins the body), which do not bend at all.

Not exactly very soft, my SAFARI Ltd dilophosaurus material is not brittle but the details are so thin I imagine they could break. It is still a cruel choice with toys I guess, harder materials allow you to make thinner and more detailed figurine and softer ones are more solid but you will have then thick fat tails, horns, legs or they will bend.
It is true for steel, for plastic or PVC.
Look at the older SCHLEICH kudu and the last one. The older is thicker everywhere and the material is softer.


And the SAFARI Ltd Dilophosaurus has got very thin details, you can't have that on amodel with softer matreial, except if you agree the model can't stand on his legs

I don't know much abuot the older Safari dinos, but I have the newer Wild Safari apatosaurus, dilophosaurus and brachiosaurus (yes, I know, I broke my rule! ) and the only once I noticed that had a problem was the brachiosaurus. It's neck seemed to be very flexible comapred to the apatosaurus who seemed to be solid as a rock.

Im just going to thorow this out there again, These are not ment for rough play.

I gave this extra to a kid to play with, and when he gave it back, it lost a foot and a piece of its tail

Wow, I'm so sad to hear that!

I have some Safari ltd. dinos and I've never had any problems with the materials... Though I have no kids and whenever my friends come over, I'm all "Don't touch my dinos!" :'D

But good to know that I have to pack my Wild Safari Dilopho extra carefully when I move this spring....

May i ask what year is on the belly of the Brachiosaur?
