PostSubject: Dhole - a small Asian dog   Sat Jan 12, 2013 6:24 pm

During the breakes in learning for my exams, I have been making dhole figure. It's a small Asian dog, very cute and beautiful. I've made one already but it was just ugly and unnatural, so I've been making another one. I've made a small sketch of it. I hope I will manage to make it as good as I can.

WOW! It looks like it is going to be fantastic..it is a great pose and a beautyful animal cheers

I always think about Kipling`s Jungle Book, when I hear about the dholes, - horrible story, isn`t it?
At that time people still thougfht about some animals as "good" and some as "evil" silent

This is what I've made by far, I consider some small changes but the figure is so small that it is hard to change anything. I will post better pictures tomorrow.

Agata, Agata, that is a brave choice from you.
A dhole must be surely a very hard animal to sculpt. First, it is not as recognizable as a African wild dog, for example, not always I see a picture from this animal I am sure what I am seeing. :)
Then, it is not designed in our memory as a wolf. Only very subtile details can help distiguishing between a dhole and some other wild dogs. study Adding to species choice, a pose very hard to get and a small size. affraid
I really like your work but I would love to make some little suggestions.
Mainly face, it looks too cat like. if you can make a more pointy snout, with the nose closer to the mouth, it will give a little more fox appearance although not as long as in a fox!
Also ears, the space between them in real animals looks similar to the space between eyes, those of your figure need maybe a wider space, a more vertical stance and be somewhat longer.
Check Arkive pictures! study
I think those are minor changes that will improve the figure and give it a more canid look. Very Happy
I am sorry if I am being unpleasant, but if I am giving some of my time to suggest something, it is because I absolutly believe in your work and talent. flower Very Happy

Thank you Roger, I accept every suggestion and comment - there is no improvement without critique :) As far as nobody else commented it I suppose that it is not likeable, so I consider making it once again and from the whole beginning, but slightly bigger Very Happy It's my first canine ever made.

Great choice, it is my favorite canid species along with the African wild dog. It is such a beautiful animal and your figure is fantastic.

I don't think you have to ignore your work, actually that is very good for a first try, I think making and remaking is a part of sculpting. Also, myself included, you can read some posts about members appreciating your work. flower
Anyway, it is a good thing that you accept some criticism as long as it is in a construtive way. Very Happy I never sculpted, so commenting is easy. My only wish is that you continue giving us the pleasure of enjoying us with your beautiful works. cheers

Agata, you are very brave to make such a specie Sad(o)):

A dhole seems a big enterprise because it is already uneasy to point the characteristic features. IMHO choosing an unusual pose to show an unusual specie is very risky. Unusual pose are better for very easily identifiable species. Then everybody knows what to expect and can enjoy the pose. For a less identifiable specie, a model need to focus on the characteristics. Unless the pose is a characteristic, it would disturb the identification.

I've changed some things as Rogerio suggested. I also consider making new ears and making bigger chest. I've changed the colouring, thickened the tail and lenghtened the nose. The figure is really small, there's the comparison with Schleich wolf pup:

great work--I watched a video of the pack taking down a baby Gaur with its huge mother trying to protect him. Reminded me so much of the African Wild Dog hunting practice.

Agata, the figure is really small. I'm actually impressed with the amount of detail you can put in it. Shocked It is terrible for me to keep suggesting once I don't have idea how much work it gives and what really is possible to do in such a small figurine. . Very Happy
The figure is better, mainly in profile view. I continue thinking ears are too close and nose is not close enough to the mouth, I'm not sure I like the vertical strip between nose and mouth, it looks minimal in real animals. It also gives the cat appearance I told before. cat
The work is very nice, please don't change it because of my suggestions, I don't trust in my observations although I enjoy commenting. flower geek flower

Right. Here's the final version of my dhole. I've changed the ears completely, I hope it looks now more like a dog than a cat. I hope you'll enjoy it. I've also decided to make a small scene with dhole and takin - I'm actually working on a new mishmi.

Very nice Agata Very Happy It looks more like a dhole now. IMHO it would be even better if the neck was more fuzzy. I think the dhole necks are looking big because the hairs are fuzzy.

I know Kiki, but it is really hard to make a fluffy fur structure on such a small figure - even if I add some more clay, it still looks flat Sad
