PostSubject: African Bush Elephant model   Wed Apr 03, 2013 7:37 am

I recently completed a 1:48 scale model of an African bush elephant to go along with my Eofauna models.

Painting the model with acrylics and pastels.

Completed model on stone base.

1:48 scale compared to Britains 1:32 scale 1310 African elephant.

1:48 scale to match the Eofauna elephant set. The Eofauna elephant is scaled at 11ft tall, my elephant is 13ft tall.

SUSANNE, Harriet, stef1000, animalluvr6, aandmkw, Isabeau, cattlecollector, Philter4: Thank you all for your comments.

Regarding the pose, this model is a 1:48 replica of an actual museum specimen in America. I wanted my own copy of this elephant so I made one myself.

Thanks, this is actually an older bull, I'd estimate around 50 something years in age.

This model was sculpted in the computer then 3D printed so once I work out a few problems in the model I may release it for people to order directly from the 3D site.

The 3D model as sculpted on the computer. This method allows many fine details and accuracy

I take a deep bow for you! It's a beautiful model and the painting is great! I hope these are the first few steps of a bright future of 3D printed animal models!
In which material it's printed? Do you have also some pictures of the model without paint?

Thank you for your comment, the model was printed in frosted ultra detail material and is hollow.

I had the same question!
The material is a UV cured acrylic polymer, a type of plastic. It is fragile in the sense that thin parts like the ears or tail can snap under pressure. In thicker parts it is quite durable, I had to drill a hole in the stomach to fill it with plaster and surprisingly it did not crack or break at all.
